Any advice on which yogurt to give to my daughter for the first time? She's about 7.5 months old. I always see the little mini-go yogurt cups. Are those OK...or should I be giving her a plain yogurt and mixing in my own fruit? Any interesting combination anyone has tired to mix with plain yogurt?
Thanks!! I love hearing what other moms do on here!!This thread is currently associated with: N/A

I used to combine plain yogourt, Balkan style (6% milk fat) with frozen fruit or with the pureed/strained fruit from baby food jars.
Later on, I would add some rice cereal to thicken the combination, since the fruit would tend to make the yogourt a little runny.

Babies need higher fat content and lower sugar content. Just read the labels. I agree with PPs that mixing in your own fruit eventually is much better for the nutritional content.

I always fed my son the full-fat probiotic yogurt, but it is probably still more nutritious to go with plain and mix in your own fruit.

i used the plain balkan yogurt too, it has the most fat and it has no added ingredients and it has active culture (maybe all yogurt does, i dont know). astro makes it and you can find it at no frills, loblaws, rcss...
at first i didnt even put anything in it, my son just ate it straight, later i started adding my own ingredients.

I used to buy a carton of plain yogurt and a carton of fruit flavoured (both full fat, no artificial sweetener), mix them half and half.

I thought you weren't supposed to give babies any milk products till after their 1st birthday? (maybe I'm totally wrong??) My guy is 8 months.

Wow - awesome....plain yogurt is def. the way I'll go! I only have 2% at home so I will go pick up some Whole stuff. I do let her have little bites of my 2% yogurt and she loves it so I know it will be a big hit with her. Can't wait to give her something new!
As for it being dairy...I was reading that yogurt and cheese are the dairy products that are OK before age 1 for two reasons. Because you don't drink it it can't replace formula/breast milk and also because of the way it is prepared makes it OK to have for babies.

When Caleb was younger I gave him yo-baby yogurt. It is organic and available in the refrigerated organic section at loblaws and some SDMs. He loved it.
Now that he is older, he eats the stuff I eat.

Plain with fruit is awsome.
Now my sons a bit older and he has fun making his own. He helps me I scoop the yogurt and he drops in the fruit and mixes it all up.
He also really likes roasted oats mixed in with the yogurt. Gives it a bit of a crunch.
Sometimes with the strawberries I boil some water with a vanilla bean so it gets some flavour and then use some of that water to puree the strawberries.
I like the concept of the light vanilla taste

There is a brand, which Loblaws is finally carrying (Walmart has had it for awhile) Lil'ones by Dairyland....sweetened with fruit juice - no added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Its more expensive, but since my little guys love yogurt it was worth the spend to give them less added sugar.

I've been giving my DD Astro Balkan Style plain yogurt mixed with random baby foods. So far she loves it mixed with sweet potatoes, carrots and applesauce. Plus I'll add a bit of cereal to thicken it and then zap it for about 10sec so its not so cold.
Smells gross, tastes gross but she loves it!!
So I figure why buy such expensive individual yogurt cups when I have so much baby food stocked up and she loves it mixed.
