I second Zameluzza's recommendation.
Microsoft Works is not free to download. You can only legally purchase it on a disk.
OpenOffice is open-source software from Sun Microsystems, a large and reputable company (most famously known for their Java programming framework and the Solaris operating system). All major operating systems contain Java programming (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, etc.)
OpenOffice is a powerful software package compatible with all document formats and includes OpenOffice Writer (word processor), Calc (spreadsheet), Impress (presentation), Draw (drawing), Base (database), and Writer/Web (webpage editing/creation).
The similarity of the layout will be very familiar for users of Microsoft products and has more functionality.
OpenOffice is free (as in beer - ) software.
