Ontario vehicle owners - Free mandatory licence plate renewal

New, starting July 1, 2024.

Plates will renew automatically if certain conditions are met.

Your plate may automatically renew if you drive a:

• passenger vehicle
• light commercial vehicle under 3,000 kg
• motorcycle
• moped

For your licence plate to renew automatically you must have valid insurance and no outstanding fines or tolls.

They added an expiry checker: https://cxp.mgcs.gov.on.ca/check-expiry/en

You can renew up to 180 days before expiry. Obviously renew for 2 years.

Also, you should have received a refund last year for vehicle plate fees paid after March 1, 2020.

Fine in Ontario about $100 but if you get caught while in Quebec it's about $500.

The Ontario Provincial Police have been noticing several drivers that have been pulled over have not been renewing their personal vehicle licence plates since the removal of the plate stickers & fee requirements.

Worth reminding owners of personal vehicles needing plate renewals to check on your birthday month to see if you have renewed or need to renew your plates. Along with your driver's licenses of course.
