Wow!! That is some serious politics!! I have heard of SPCA getting into their own little communist state before. I don't understand it. In regards to AC, that's insane!!! I got my beautiful lab rottie mix from AC. She's an angel! AC around here tends to sell them to labs.
This year, the city put a councillor on the board of the SPCA. He is an animal lover himself, has two cats, I have contacted him already about the issues with animal control and the SPCA (like their agreement that AC does no adoptions because it conflicts with SPCA mandate which to me means the SPCA forces Animal Control to euthanize). AC does back door agreements with small rescues, but you can only pick up at certain times, makes it hard to coordinate volunteers and vets etc.
Some of the vets help rescues, but won't go against the SPCA who has a history of raiding/fighting who are vocal about their policies. They held a low cost spay neuter clinic last year (1 day only) for low income families but see pets over ferals (fair enough, we have a huge unneutered pet population too). When we moved, we were going to switch to a local vet, called around - 4 of 10 refused because I have a former feral, two gave me a hard time about my choices with Quincy (I don't vaccinate him because it can have adverse reactions with his heart meds and he doesn't go outside).
What about a call to action via a newspaper article or posted on local forums asking for volunteers but mostly local vets to volunteer some time?? Maybe a little city shaming in there to motivate them to help out a little?
Nope, the city is terrible about strays. We have a local SPCA that has a feral cat program, but they are joined to the Animal Control who just euthanize them if reported and when you call the SPCA, they say call AC - they really just use it for their volunteers who want to have a colony (and I worked for another shelter so they don't like me lol). They are only really left in rural areas. If you report, they send AC to collect them. People have been lobbying the city for ages but they don't do anything except complain about businesses complaining that cats get in the garbage. They ticket you for feeding them too so I haven't called. One woman at the moment is getting weekly tickets because she is feeding 5 cats and has her own so it puts her over the animal limit in city limits The friendlier ones I have got a rescue to take, but the skittish ones are never going to be adopted quickly (and many of them are black cats too).
Awww. . .that's sad you have so many strays. Is there a feral cat program around there? A capture/spay/release?
We have a lot of strays, he doesn't usually care. There is one he seems to be buddies with, they sit at the window and chatter - no aggression at all. If we didn't have so many, I would have let that one in by now. Just the latest one, he cannot stand him. Its quite funny, I can tell which stray is in the garden just by hearing him or Izzy - deep growls every time they see this black and white cat
Absolutely. He's a preening MALE. They're all narsisistic giant babies! Lol
He is good (unless he sees me feeding the stray that has been coming around recently, he hates him lol)

Not sure, since our little princess hates them even more, we try not to have people bring dogs over. He doesn't growl at the neighbour's dog from the window anymore though I would miss him too much anyway, need my morning Roo snuggle despite the fact he can be a jerk when he feels like it LOL
Trust me. . .if you sent me Roo, I'd have to send you Tux. . . not a good trade for you. Lol Besides, has he gotten over his distaste for dogs?

It's funny that you mention Roo liking the little girl across the street. . . all of Chloe's babies loved children. One of them even went to a childcare place and owner complained he liked the kids better than her! lol Of course, Roo isn't one of Chloe's babies, but maybe it rubbed off a little. . . .
I call him brat as his name most of the time LOL So much easier than roobot lollipop like the little girl across the street calls him. I will be working in the office and hear a squeal of LOLLYPOP and he flies to the kitchen window to see her

Your cat (I call him that when he is bad lol) stole my clothes this morning so I couldn't to work, then when I finally got them all from around the house, I was chasing him up and down the stairs with one heel on and the other in his mouth because he didnt want me to have shoes either

I don't think Quincy is ready to give that up, they are laid back but when something happens between them, you can clearly see who is boss. Its cute though, as big and tough as he thinks he is, if I close roo off in a room before a vet appt or to give Autumn a break from him, Quincy will try to break it down to get at him, he needs his (not so) little chew toy
I just bet he WOULD like to be alpha cat. I'm fortuneate in having very laid back cats. They have tobe. . .to put up with Eddie. lol
They do, when I worked at the shelter, some cats would be visibly upset when a cat was adopted, even if they had not interacted with each other - just saw each other from cages across the room. Bumps was the oldest too so its probably some hierarchy issues (Roo would like to think he is an alpha cat)
