Hello Sc'ers
Now that back to school is less than a month away I thought it would be great to post some back to school deals on supplies. This is my first deal post so lemme know if there's a better format I can list them in. These deals may not be in your area though, and similarly you may have better ones in your area- Please share any that you find!
* Deals under a dollar are bolded. Important notices are in blue.
NOTE: If you'd like to earn thumbs up towards your top deals/top brags please post a seperate thread to earn them. You cannot earn thumbs up from posts, only starting your own thread. If you're not looking for thumbs up or have already posted a thread, please share your deals (PM me or post here if I haven't seen your thread yet) so they can all be kept in this thread!

Back to school shopping tips:
- Make a list with your child before leaving to avoid buying unnecessary items. A list of needed supplies according to grade may be on the school's website or may be available at your local Staples or Wal-mart store.
- Children may be asked to purchase an agenda or planner the first week of school, usually costing about $4-$6.
- If items are sold out, you can price match at stores with the items in stock. Both Zellers and Wal-mart price match if you didn't know already.
- If your child is an art student, it may be better to wait to buy their supplies. Schools may invite specialized art store representatives (ex. from Curry's, Deserres etc.) to sell premium art supplies from sketchbooks to paint brushes at a discounted rate.
- Dollarama and other local dollar stores may have good deals on notebooks, pens, pencil and other supplies as well. However with all the back to school deals you may find better prices elsewhere for better quality products.
- Purchase quality backpacks that will last more than one year. Licensed characters may become old after a year (ex. Dora). Get children to try on backpacks for comfort, check the amount of space/compartments, and the durability of the materials used.
- If you will be visiting across the border over the summer, you may want to stop for some less expensive school supplies than those available in Canada.
- Spending a bit more on more durable binders or fabric binders will payoff in the next years when you can reuse them. It keeps you from spending more money while also keeping more wwaste from ending up in our landfills.
- Things you may forget: A pair of shoes for indoors, boxes of tissues for your child's classroom, a thermos/tupperware for lunches, construction paper for projects & crafts, labels for binders, books, lunch bags, pencil cases and the like...
- For middle school and high school students, most schools require your child to purchase their own lock. If you're unsure don't worry, as they're usually given 2 weeks to settle into their lockers. Accesories like shelves, mirrors, and pencil cups can be a great way to keep their lockers organized (especially in winter months with large coats and shoe changes). Make sure they can open the lock on their own just fine!
> If schedules are mailed to your home, make sure they are sent to school with them and they are kept in a safe place.

Great idea for a thread. But I want to make everyone aware that by posting all the deals in one thread people miss out on getting any deserved thumbs up for SC's Monthly Top Deal Posters contest in this section of SC. You only get the thumbs up credit if you create the thread(s) yourself. Not to say people can't post in here, but since some people have been concerned about their numbers for Top Deals/Top Brags, I want to get this issue out in the open right away.

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware! Perhaps people can post seperate threads and I can continue to add those deals to the thread for one convenient location. So if anyone has a deal, post a thread first and you can link me to it/inform me here.
Would that be alright?

I don't know if this is true in other cities but in Montreal at many of the Walmarts they will have your school list in the store on a big display near the supplies. I received mine through the school but there must have been about 50 different schools with sheets there.

Thanks Patty
This makes another Wal-mart deal to added to the new ones, including some new costco & giant tiger deals.
Our Wal-mart doesn't have those lists, not yet anyways, but I do remember Staples having them a couple years ago.

This isn't really a deal, but I *highly* suggest getting a good quality backpack. When I worked at Loblaws, the amount of cheap licensed backpacks we got complaints about/had to return/exchange etc was appalling. If it's not going to last a month why bother? I've had my Dakine backpack for 2.5 years and at 50$ it's been a steal compared to the cheap licensed ones stores always sell for half that price.
