I'm not certain where to place this since it's my first such offering, but having see this elegant, noble lady perform "tricks" that I thought went out with the last century, I was disgusted!! I don't believe animals are placed on this earth to entertain us by doing things that are not within their normal realm of behavior. Any animal! Not only that, Limba was accompanied by a teenager who stood on her head doing vogue poses and it made me sick to my stomach.
I don't know how you feel about petitions, but I couldn't let this one pass me by.
Here's her story:In 1964, baby elephant Limba was torn from her family in Vietnam and shipped to Canada where she has been rented out to perform in circuses ever since.
Today, Limba is Canada's oldest elephant. Animal rights group KARA says Limba is in bad health and probably only has a few years left to live. That's why they started a petition on Ch ange.org asking the Bowmanville Zoo to allow Limba to retire after a life of hard work. <http://www.change.org/en-CA/petition...wwB_yhGhgEjDBe>
Click here to sign KARA's petition. <http://www.change.org/en-CA/petition...wwB_yhGhgEjDBe>
Despite her age and health, the Bowmanville Zoo continues to rent Limba out and force her to work in the circus -- transporting her thousands of miles in a cramped trailer to entertain audiences. When not in the spotlight under the big top, Limba is sent to work at fairs, parades, movie and commercial sets, and children's parties.
There is reason to hope. After much public pressure, the Toronto Zoo recently agreed to send three aging elephants to a wildlife sanctuary in California. If enough people pressure the Bowmanville Zoo, they might allow Limba to retire too.
KARA says would be tragic if Limba were forced to spend her last days in a circus or overheated trailer. Click here to sign their petition to let Limba retire and enjoy her last years . <http://www.change.org/en-CA/petition...wwB_yhGhgEjDBe>
Thanks for supporting animals using Change.org,
Lauryn and the Change.org team
We would like to inform that today we had the most signatures EVER on the petition! In a single day 1300 caring animal advocates gave a voice to Limba and now they are aware that she exists and that she matters! This was all possible thanks to the marvelous support that the on-line petition website change.org <http://change.org?utm_source=supporter_message&utm_medium =email> & Lauryn has given KARA. Thank you so much for caring for Limba and thank you so much to 3500 from Change.org <http://Change.org?utm_source=supporter_message&utm_medium =email> for making this happen. Limba depends on each of the signatures that we all collect and Limba is counting on us to share the petition once we have already signed it. Her suffering has made so many ignorant people laugh when they visit the cruel circus or zoo.It is time that people open their eyes to reality and they see that Limba deserves to be the one happy and it is up to us to push for that reality. Thank you!
If you find it in your hearts to do so, please sign this petition and pressure the Bowmanville Zoo to retire Limba...she's endured enough!!

Thank you, Bluerose...having watched her perform those ridiculous tricks made those of us with hearts terribly sad...and disgusted at the management that insists this is proper entertainment. How unenlightened!!

Thank you, Holly....sorry I couldn't rep you, too...I guess I'm way behind in my repping!!
Yes, it was exceptionally sad...Honestly, I didn't know people still made elephants (and I guess other wild creatures, too) do those stupid tricks. If anyone says they're doing to entertain children, then I say that it's an educational privilege for them to see wild animals humanely treated in respectable habitats similar to theirs; seeing them perform antics has nothing to do with educating them, and it demeans noble creatures!
Any adult that condones such treatment of animals aught to be ashamed of themselves!!

hey lynn, thanks for posting this.
of course i sgned, and my other 3 personalities (what only 3?) will too.
i'm surprised i hadn't heard about limba, as i'm still waiting for the release of the toronto zoo elephants.
couldn't even read the details, i hate zoos.
on a more personal note, my mom was devastated when she found out that the ivory necklace
she had (with little carved elephants) had been gotten the way it must have been.
you might want to ask improperganda about bringing this issue to a wider audience.
just looked and she hasn't signed in since august 6th, but you never know and i'm sending her
the link to here.
thanks again lynn, so hoping limba could be included in the free the toronto zoo elephants logic.
oh bloody heck, went to find a photo of limba and found this:
http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/arti...s-a-family-job
they 'train' exotic animals --- it's a family tradition
sighing into the keyboard,,,,,
p.s. don't bother to rep me, i gave up even trying months ago
