Hi I will be checking references of people wanting to rent a room where I am living.I know the questions I need to ask in order to cover the problems we have encountered in the past,But are there imperative questions I should be asking? Other than previous landlords are there other people I should get references from !

We moved in the fall, and every place we applied for asked for two personal references as well as past landlords. We only had to give our last landlord, as we had been there 18 years.
Not sure about questions, though - for landlord, I suppose you would want to know if they paid their rent on time, were there damages to the place, were there noise complaints.
Remember there are some questions you cannot ask; check with your province's human rights legislation.

I get calls from landlords regularly here at my work that are calling for reference checks. I know that in the GTA most will ask for a work reference (letter of employment). Its good to know the person has a steady income.
