You do not need to catch it at the till.

For instance Safeway's tills do not reflect sale prices until clerk totals so you might not catch a mistake.

I found several errors on a Walmart receipt once I got home and wasn't able to return until the following week. They just looked up the flyer for that week and gave me the scop.
