we had pen pals in grade 4 english class
teacher wanted us to improve our writing and communication skills
guess the modern equivalent is sponsoring a child in another country and sending letters or online correspondence through the sponsoring agency

I did when I was in elementary school, and we actually kept up for quite a while - they were from England.
Then I had one as an adult - through an organization of a medical condition - and it was interesting til it got weird; he was from Riyadh.

I had a pen friend when I was in grade 3 whom I corresponded to for 2 years and he was from Greece.

My penpal in England and I have been writing to each other for 30 years. Though it is sometimes tempting to correspond my email (faster and less expensive), we have stayed true to pen-and-paper. We aren't connected by any form of social media, either. We prefer to keep it "tangible" and really, it's always more fun to receive a letter in the mail!
Unique items and great deals to be found on the Halifax Cat Rescue Society auction page.

Like others have posted, I had 2 in Elementary school (One from Spain and One from Australia). We kept in touch by writing and snail mailing for 2-3 years then it died out.
I've had a few online pen pals that I met through SC. We write via email but I haven't been great keeping up communications in the last year or so. Just super busy.

When I was 14 I had a pen pal in Germany (male) and one in the USA (girl). The guy planned on visiting Canada with his family. Unfortunately we lost contact somehow. Same with the girl in the USA. We corresponded for approximately 6-8 months. It was fun and exciting receiving a letter in the mail.
