I have a sideboard that I would like to "spiff up."
It has a birch top and is white.
What is the trick or method or just some hints about chalk painting?
Any info appreciated. Thanks in advance! This thread is currently associated with: N/A

Have not done chalk painting but did read something about the inventor of it. She said not all chalk paints are like hers-there is something particular in her paints that other brands do not deliver. Have to see if I can find out where I saw that interview.
Our city's fashion/decor district has a business that promotes classes and items for sale with chalk paint. https://www.thepaintedbench.ca/produ...ry/chalkpaint/2021-Bring on the sunshine, sweets & online shopping.

There is a place in London called Stan Portleys. It sells the Annie Sloan chalk paint and I think has classes as well. You can google it

Hi, @avoncallingu!!
The nice thing about chalk paint is that there isn't the prep-work that's usually involved with other painting methods.
AND you don't even have to buy chalk paint! You can mix 2C of regular paint with 1/3C of Plaster of Paris and some water. (the recipe on the site below is a little different)
I want to paint our nightstands and a wall unit and was looking at chalk paint sites today and found recipes! Good to know you can use up paint you may already have. You can tint paint with the little Plaid-type bottles from Michaels.
Here are 3 recipes with photos for chalk paint!

Wed, Apr 12th, 2017, 12:58 PM #6Startpaintingyour piece with a good paintbrush.Chalk paintdries very quickly, and you should be able to tell right away if it is going to need a 2nd coat. If so, apply 2nd coat as soon as the 1st coat is dry. After thepaintis dry, begin applying the clear wax in small sections.

I've used both chalk paint and milk paint (Miss Mustard Seed's Milk paint). I really love the milk paint with the bonding agent, its much thinner and I find easier to work with. (Without the bonding agent, the milk paint chips and flakes, which gives a really unique antique effect.) I always strip/sand my pieces first to get the old protective coating off.
If you aren't planning to strip/sand, then chalk paint is probably the better option. Its nice and thick and should go right over top without too much trouble. If you find its too thick, you can add a little water to give it a smoother consistency.
Have fun! I always enjoy sitting out in the sun working on projects in the summer time. I'd love to see a picture when you are finished!!

Hello, all!! @avoncallingu , I just finished our night tables with white Rustoleum Chalky Paint. I painted over a dark walnut and it took 3 coats to get it the way I wanted it. Drying time is about an hour, two to be on the safe side, so they could have been done in one day had I not been distracted. I also painted the bottom pull. I wanted to replace that curly-q french provincial looking thing, but the post span is much larger than the spans the new ones have, and it turned out really sweet! I will replace the two top knobs with crystally looking ones I spotted at Home Depot a couple of weeks ago...they go for around $5-7 there, and around $12 at CT. I also just painted a canning jar thing I purchased at Michaels a long time ago...it was a deep yellow shade. Since this room will be blue and yellow, I'll distress it a little so that the yellow shows through.
All in all, it was a fun paint to use, no prep-work except for a swipe with a weak vinegar/water solution.

The Style section of the Hamilton Spectator had a few photos of a recent workshop at the Painted Bench but I cannot locate the article online. Hope to do so when I look up the headline for the photos tomorrow at the library (only keeps 1 week of papers so I have to hustle).

Painted Bench in Hamilton, the vendor for Annie Sloan Chalk Paints, is doing a tray workshop in June. Thought I'd post the link in case SCers want in on the evening activity for $55. https://twitter.com/ThePaintBench/st...54023879979008
