I was reading a wedding forum recently* and one of the threads was about first dance songs.

I was surprised as to the number of times Hinder's Lips of an Angel and Bryan Adams' Run to You were mentioned. Between them, it seemed to be at 10% of songs chosen.

Do people not listen to the lyrics?

    * A RL friend of mine is a member and is remarrying and she's one who wants LoaA as thier song even though she divorced her ex for infedelity....

Guess the lyrics dont matter to some people?

Personally they mean a lot to me. It took forever for us to agree on our wedding songs - well all except 3-4.

Now you have me curious what other SC'er have used. A few of ours were: Deathcab for Cutie - I will follow you into the dark, Blue Rodeo - Lost Together, Tragically Hip - Long time running, Roch Voisine - I'll always be there, Beatles - In my life

i was at a wedding reception many years ago, and the song that the couple walked in to was u2's 'with or without you'.

it just seemed like a weird, weird choice! they also played 'all i want is you'

This was the song that made me fall in love with my DH. (He tricked me with the whole cool guitar player let me teach you) when I was sixteen and it was the first song we danced to ten years later at our wedding.

We also had a special dance for my brother and his wife because they never had a reception and they picked "November Rain" I really loved that song too.

We actually had a family member DJ for us and DH made up four CD's of all of our favourite songs but I can't for the life of me remember what half of them were. LOL.

I know of a couple whose first dance was to "I Don't Know Much (but I know I love you"....

It seemed like a very odd choice, but they picked it...

DH and I aren't married. And we don't dance. We do, however, have a song: Neil Young's "Heart of Gold." We are both big Neil Young fans, and CBC Radio (which I listen to religiously) was doing the National Playlist show in the fall/winter of 2005 (the year we met). This song was a perennial part of that playlist, and it just kinda stuck for us. (A second favourite is "Harvest Moon" - a Neil Young song that Pearl Jam performed at a concert we saw in September 2005)

Darth, I've noticed the same thing - sometimes I guess they fall in love with the song anyway - just like the melody, or ?

ashokia, that's a beautiful song! What a nice story, too!
glowworm - I love both those songs!

Well, our first song wasn't a romantic love song either! It's a traditional Ukrainian ballad, about mother and son parting forever. The mother gives him a traditional cloth into which she has embroidered all her hopes and fears, and her love for him.
However, the embroidered cloth (rushnyk) features in a Ukrainian wedding - we stood on it during the ceremony. It's most often embroidered by the MOB, but in our case, we used a very special one, made by my Baba.
The major sentiment is the same - in the song, and embroidered on the cloth, are: 'na dolia' - for good fate/destiny; 'na shchastia' - for love, joy, the best of everything in life.

Our second song was a Ukrainian version of "The Rose".

Personally, the lyrics mean a lot to me...maybe they don't understand the meaning behind the song? I've known that to happen (my husband thought "Every Breath You Take" by the Police was a great love song until I told him it's actually about an obsessive stalker lol)

Our wedding song was pretty straight forward, it was called "I Wanna Grow Old With You" by Westlife.

We did too! LOL!!! If I had to do it all over again, I would want a traditional wedding but for our first dance I'd wanna start it with a nice slow song then get into sir mix a lots "baby got back". Give everyone something to talk and laugh about!

We got married almost 7 years ago and used John Legend Stay With You.

We've been together for a while now
    We're growing stronger everyday now
It feels so good and there's no doubt
I will stay with you as each morning brings sunrise
And the flowers bloom in springtime
On my love you can rely
    And I'll stay with you

Oh I'll stay with you through the ups and the downs
Oh I'll stay with you when no one else is around
And when the dark clouds arrive
I will stay by your side
    I know we'll be alright
    I will stay with you

    Though relationships can get old
They have the tendency to grow cold
    We have something like miracle
Yeah, and I'll stay with you

Oh I'll stay with you through the ups and the downs
Oh I'll stay with you when no one else is around
And when the dark clouds arrive
I will stay by your side
    I know we'll be alright
    I will stay with you

And there will be heartaches and pains, yes it will
But through it all, we will remain
In this life, we all know
Friends may come, and they may go
    Through the years I know
    I will stay
And in the end I know that we'll find
    Love so beautiful and divine
We'll be lovers for the lifetime, yeah
    And I'll stay with you
    I will stay with you

Oh I'll stay with you through the ups and the downs
Oh I'll stay with you when no one else is around
And when the dark clouds arrive
I will stay by your side
    I know we'll be alright
    I will stay with you
    Everything will be fine
And I will stay with you
    Through the end of time
    I will stay with you
