Long post warning
Story first, then an idea
If someone doesn't leave a negative rating when they don't get a trade, how will others know that that trader doesn't honour their trades? What is the point of having a rating system if no one leaves the proper rating?
I still feel kind of guilty because I was waiting on a trade from a trader for a long time, but she was responding to me and said she was going to send a replacement, so I held off on rating her. Then weeks later she said she was going to send another replacement. Of course I never received anything, and then I started hearing about others who were also waiting on trades from her, so I finally gave up and gave her a negative. But if I had not waited so long to rate her, maybe some others would not have been ripped off - some trades were arranged after her second replacement should have arrived.
Yes, she was pretty angry with the negatives. She went on about how she had suffered many "tragedy's" (her spelling, not mine) and that's why she wasn't honouring trades. Well, when we started comparing what we were missing from her, it seemed only high value trades or trades for GCs or stamps were missing. She had mailed lower value trades in the meantime. Plus, she kept initiating trades and still had her trade list up and was bumping it. I realize that real life can get in the way of trading, but if you can't honour past trades, then you should stop arranging new ones. If you still had time with these "tragedy's" to bump and update your trade list, then you had time to stick a few coupons in an envelope and put it in a mailbox.
Her friends stuck up for her when the negative ratings started piling up - even leaving her multiple positive ratings that I doubt were from actual trades. She had been a good trader before that, so I don't blame anyone for defending her, but it still made me angry to see that. We're not talking about one trade gone wrong, I think she ended up with a dozen negative ratings from trades going back 3+ months.
The point of my whole story is I don't know how to prevent something like that from happening again, because she was still coming online and saying she was going to send a replacement. I really did think she would make it up to me. She had a very high rating, and had received many positive ratings in the weeks I was waiting for her trade. I don't know how I could have warned anyone (or even that I should have) because she had such a high rating - I wanted to believe I would get my trade.
So here is the idea (I think others have mentioned this before, I am not claiming this as my own idea):
I wonder if it is possible to have some sort of system for pending trades. Perhaps we could add another trade rating called "pending" and leave it the day the trade was supposed to be mailed. If adding a new trade rating would be too difficult, maybe we could just leave a neutral rating saying something like "trade arranged today". You could change it to positive when the trade arrives. Or maybe we could leave visitor messages saying a trade was arranged? So someone could see TraderA has 10 trades pending, all at least a month old, but TraderA is on the site nearly every day - something must be up. Or TraderB's oldest pending trade is just a week or two old, so they are on top of their trades.
It wouldn't be perfect because I know some people are quite tardy about leaving trade ratings, and of course Canada Post can be slow sometimes so the trade might take a month to arrive even if the trader did everything fine. So, one outstanding trade should probably not be held against someone, but it they have a few that are weeks old, you might want to ask for their side first.
There is probably a better way of doing a pending trade system, that's just what I thought of. Maybe any kind of system would be too hard to implement - I don't know, it's just an idea. I just don't know how else to prevent a big scammer from hitting as many people as they can over a few weeks before the negative ratings start showing up.
Okay, that was a really long post, sorryThanks to anyone who actually got through it all!

People need to realize this isn't highschool nor is it a daycare. If I leave someone a negative rating based on merit I dare any of their little friends to come biatch in my PM box. I don't care how much you whine and tell me I'm unfair or I lack understanding for the poor chap's life ordeals, really I don't... your friend still screwed me. Case in point!
I wouldn't wish my present life on anyone at the moment yet, I find a way to make good on my trades and when I'm in a position where I'm not sure if I can make the PO that week, I DON'T TRADE!
Start minding your Ps and Qs and let's keep this place a nice and serene place. There's no need for HS drama of ANY sort.
let's face it. Your "friends" on here are for the most part virtual. They're great to help you smile and laugh and give you advice or what have you, however - you aren't in their homes, you'll never really know what goes on and the reality of it is, you have NO idea why the trade went wrong. Jumping on someone for leaving a negative rating is immature at best and well - you're doing it blindly.

Well said! I think that it's a fair assumption to make that many people that are on here are facing some kind of life or financial hardship, which is why using coupons is all the more important. However that does not give you the right to initiate trades when you do have the intention or the means to make good on them. In fact I think you're even poorer than you think if you've lost the ability to be a decent human being. Especially considering how nice everyone is on here. I think that most established members on here would get help from their SC friends if they really needed it.

I agree, and to be honest, if a good trader contacted me and said hey, I have an issue with sending this and can't afford stamps until Friday etc, I would be fine with it unless I had specified I wanted a quick trade for something on sale. But the whole 'oh I sent it on x date' when its a complete lie annoys me.
I don't agree with pending ratings, its a PITA for Caring to change them (she has to delete an you leave a new one) but if after a month it has not arrived, leave a neg or neutral and then that can be changed rather than for every trade as pending

I think the pending trade system might end up being a nightmarish confusion. I know we're all guilty of sometimes forgetting to leave feedback for a week or two after a trade has completed. It would only get worse if there was a rating you had to leave after a trade had started.

Ebay allows you to leave a note underneath -ve and neutral ratings. Maybe something like that, so people feel like they have their say too.
