Need your help on an important question

My HS did assemblies, I can assume they still do. I also agree with Judstir, if kids have the day, they may not do anything, at least in the schools they have the assemblies, guest speakers in the library for classes to sign up for, etc.

When I lived in Ottawa I would go over to Quebec every once in awhile, Im not talking deep int Quebec more like Gatineau area and when I tried asking people for directions etc they would start speaking French to me...I would tell them sorry I don't speak French and they would walk away!
I worked at the Ottawa Airport and I had one gentleman and I use the term loosley, ask me a question in french, I said sorry I don't speak french, he repeated himself...I repeated myself..after 3 times of telling him I do not speak French he told me in perfect english..."You should be ashamed of yourself for being so ignorant and not knowing Canada's offical language" I was like and just walked away.

He;s probably the a*sshat who made a fuss because an AirCanada stewardess didn't ask him what he wanted to drink in French, because it's so hard to understand what someone with a drink trolley is trying to ask of you (trust me, I've been in this situation in South Korea, really not that hard). He's also the same idiot who wants all OC Transpo drivers to yell out the stop names in French, dolt, really, who cares, "Baseline, Baseline", what needs to be translated?!

schools were never closed on rememberance day for us, i grew up in BC, they aren't closed for my daughter either, i live in ON now

Thats not to say that some haven't taken pity on me and switched to English - have never taken it as an insult though cos i know that sometimes my mind just stops and i can't figure out how to say something in french...mind you i get that way in english too

I wish I had went to a frecnh immersion elemntary school! I guess I always asked the mean people for help lol

I went to buy a hat once, near the museum of civ. because I was volunteering there that night, but while we were waiting, we wanted to walk around town, but it was stupid cold out and my head was cold, anyways, long story short the guy asked me if I wanted a bag (apparently) and I couldn't understand a word he was saying, seriously, I wasn't sure if it was french, but it had to be! (btw I do speak french!)

I tried my darn hardest to learn french in school but it never would stick

yesterday the little girl i babysit had to say the first verse of 'in flanders fields'. she's only 6 but she memorized the whole poem and read it in front of her whole school+parents.
people keep talking about how we should have the day off, kids i mean, but i know for a fact that she wouldn't have learned that poem and had long conversations with me about war and soldiers if she was just having a day off. i know it the same way i know that when i was in school i would have spent in past 11am and missed the whole thing.
my HS used to let kids go who wanted to head over to the war memorial in town and listen to the official city remembrance day instead of going to the school assembly.

even though they let us go without a escort, not one of us ever ditched. i can honestly say i wouldn't have cared about that day [until i got to the age i am now] unless it had been drilled into me as a kid. i think it's important for kids.
