A deepening low pressure system is forecast to approach from the south and track into the Gulf of St. Lawrence late Sunday.

Snow is expected ahead of the storm along the south coast on Sunday afternoon before quickly spreading northward. Snowfall accumulations will be variable with lesser amounts along the coast and more significant amounts inland and over higher terrain. It is too early to forecast amounts but there are some indications that snowfall warnings may be required. Significant rainfall amounts are also possible along the south coast on Sunday night after the change over from snow to rain.

In addition, strong easterly winds are possible on Sunday afternoon and evening. The south coast, Wreckhouse area and sections of the west coast of Newfoundland prone to enhanced easterly winds are all at high risk of needing wind warnings.

A deepening low pressure system is forecast to approach from the south and track into the Gulf of St. Lawrence late Sunday.

Across the Burin, Avalon, and Bonavista Peninsulas, this will be mainly a rain event with rain beginning Sunday morning over southernmost areas then spreading northward. The rain could be heavy at times and some forecast guidance suggests that total amounts could approach warning criteria before ending Sunday night.

Elsewhere across Newfoundland, snow is expected to develop along the south coast by noon on Sunday then quickly spread northward. Snowfall accumulations will be variable with lesser amounts along the coast and more significant accumulations inland and over higher terrain. There continues to be a good chance that snowfall warnings will be required across parts of central, western, and northern Newfoundland before the snow changes to rain or ends Sunday night or Monday.

In addition, strong easterly winds are expected to develop across the entire island on Sunday into Sunday evening. Wind warnings have already been issued for the entire south coast of Newfoundland. Warnings may have to be expanded, especially to sections of the west coast of Newfoundland prone to enhanced east to northeasterly winds.

The snow is expected to changeover to rain on Sunday evening over central Newfoundland, but will remain as snow until overnight over the Northern Peninsula. Total snowfall accumulations of 10 to 20 cm are expected before the precipitation changes to rain.

Snowfall warnings are issued when significant snowfall is expected.
