Ms. Chapman and her husband plan to tour the devastated site as soon as they can to jump-start plans for rebuilding. Despite the past two weeks of rotten luck in Markdale, they have no plans to leave the community.
"Small towns need businesses," she said. "We're not quitting - this is not the end. This is going to end up being a fresh start."

I ordered a couple of the cow aprons.... Wonder if they are on their way or if I'm out of luck...

Poor Chapman's. Hope they get straightened out. Would hate to see them go under.

I received some freezer bags that I ordered at the beginning of August today but I'm not expecting any of my other prizes. It really too bad that this fire happened, I feel bad for the workers too

Hi all...I live in Markdale and people should not feel badly for the 400 workers. Chapman's is continuing their salaries at full pay until the business is up and running again. They have made arrangement to use another business' facility until a permanent one can be found/built and they are committed to staying in the Markdale area. Chapman's has always been an unbelievably good company to work for.

It's the end folks. Rest in peace Chapmans.

I'll be back to say I told you so when they sell.
Well...like I said, I live just outside Markdale and the $2M tornado damage was to the town, not to Chapman's -- Leeman's Hardware probably took the worst hit. I don't think Chapman's was touched by the tornado at all. In the fire, the factory is a total lose and it is now a total shock to drive by...but the family is a wonderful one. They have contributed so much to the community that I'm willing to take them at their word, especially when they are continuining the full salaries of all employees. I mean...within a week or two, we'll know whether people get checks or not. I betting "yes" they will. Not everyone is "all talk" Pheb.

Sadly, the process of rebuilding may be delayed. The fire itself was caused by a spark from a welder. Chapman's has been renovating for months now and they were almost at the end of the process. A local construction firm (JonSteel, I'm told) had a welder who neglected to follow the standard procedure of having an assistant on hand to watch the sparks (or so I'm told). The insulation was polyeuranthane and everywhere. Although it has the advantage of being rather difficult to ignite, it is apparently very difficult to put out once lit. It ignited. I've been otld that JonSteel has only $5M in insurance...which I'm not sure would be paid out in this case due to negligence.. But, even if it is paid out, the damages are far, far in excess of that figure. The insurance companies and the insured are going to be facing off for months and months.

Much more...but my husband just came in to say we must continue shingling the roof and I've probably rambled on more than anyone wanted anyway.

    Best,
    Wendymac

Here is a copy of an email that I sent to all my friends and family. Feel free to copy it or make your own version.

As you may have heard, this past Friday the Chapman's Ice Cream plant in Markdale ON burnt down. Thankfully, all 400 workers got out safely.

But do you know how awesome this company is?

Chapman's is not only committed to staying in Markdale and rebuilding - BUT they are also continuing to pay the FULL salaries of those 400 workers until they are up and running again!

That is why, I'm suggesting a virtual ice cream party! Let's support this Canadian company by going out and getting a tub of our favourite Chapman's Ice Cream!

Pass this along and invite your friends to join the party!
