I agree completely that it's a distraction, but I disagree that it's working. While people everywhere all across Canada are talking about it, most disagree with it, recognize it as a distraction and are well aware of the issues at hand. We the people are not as dumb as the Government hopes we would be.

What I found amusing was the following statement, "We offered to hear from Canadians on this issue and they have already spoken loud and clear. They overwhelmingly do not want to open the issue,” said Dimitri Soudas, press secretary for Prime Minister Stephen Harper."

I don't remember anyone in Ottawa asking anyone what they thought of their proposed change. They just threw the idea out at a time when Canadians were extremely patriotic and realized it's a losing battle.
