Oh, found a great article!!! - and written by a woman...

"There is nothing wrong with singing "True patriot love, In all thy sons command." Contrary to popular, if deeply misguided, belief it does not mean that sons, i.e. men, are in command. If it did, there'd be an apostrophe after the final "s." It does not even mean that one son commands. If it did, there'd be an apostrophe before the final "s." The "thy" directly addresses the entity of Canada itself, as do the lines "with glowing hearts, we see thee rise" and "we stand on guard for thee." So, "thy sons" means "your citizens." True patriot love, in other words, is summoned up, evoked, stirred, roused, in all your citizens, Canada."

i think it's a distraction. it'll be interesting to see what's in the budget. i think that announcing this malarky about changing the anthem the day before the budget is a smokescreen. they hope we'll be so distracted by the anthem issue, we won't pay as much attention to the budget.

i just heard it on the news today and i am against changing it i like our national anthem just the way it is they had a poll on breakfast tv this am in toronto and 98% voted in favour of keeping it just the way it is

The PM porogues parliament for this? Wasn't he supposed to be really busy working hard and needed extra time to get things done?
As to the anthem- we own words and they don't own us.

You know the interesting thing about this is the fact that it was one woman who wrote a letter. One person started this, that's power.

Whe I frist heard this I thought it was the "god" issue also, never occured to me that "sons" was the "offensive" word.

The version adopted in 1980 reads as follows:

Even if they do change it, this will always be my version.

Don't they have more pressing issues to deal with? They don't need to screw up the anthem.

He prorogued parliament so that he could attend the olympics, plain and simple. There were shots of him at almost every big event shmoozing with the stars...that left little time for the less important things, like running the Country.

i heard a call in radio show, (cbc- rita celli), which had
senator ruth on. she made a couple of good points.
for example, the 2 women soliders who were brought
back in body bags, and the gold medal women
olympians, (or ladies if it was skating), well, the
anthem does not seem to include them.

one guy who phoned in had a good point, too,
- reminded me about how the stupid tories took
a ton of money out of women's programmes.,,,
wondering if it was for the funding of the

I'm all for the tweeking things that *should* be tweeked but the national anthem doesn't and should not be tweeked.. specially to "True patriot love thou dost in us command," that simple fact of it just not flowing properly with the rest of the anthem.. It just.. ... shouldn't be tweeked.. I think it's an insult to everyone.. ESPECIALLY our vets.

At least we have National Anthem....the United States doesn't really have one truly or offically...there is either the Star Spangle Banner or God Bless America....

"Star-Spangled Banner" has been the official national anthem of the United States since 1931.

"God Bless America" is just a patriotic song..

Very nice! That should be emailed to Parliment! I would be more offended as a Canadian Woman that they change the anthem rather than just leave it alone. And I'm what you would call a Liberal! Not by party because quite frankly I don't like politicians, but in mindset.
