First of all, don't spend a lot - it TRULY is the thought that counts.
As a former primary teacher, every year when we decorate the tree and put up ornaments and decorations, I absolutely still love all the ones given by former students - and remember who gave which ones!

I made a super easy and almost free note pad for each of my kids teachers, with "A note from Mrs. Smith" printed on the top of each page. I used printer paper and special glue (rubber cement from the $store). See my instructions here: http://fullofgreatideas.blogspot.com...hers-gift.html
If you want the Word file so you don't have to create it...send me a note and i can email it to you. You will just need to enter the teacher's name and you can print.
And I have also made (last year) a personalized wall art/photo of the teacher's last name for them. Really hard to explain but each letter is a photo of the letter. These turned out amazing and I was actually approached by the teachers at the end of class to ask how I did it and to thank me. Costs almost nothing (just the developing of a photo and a cheap frame) but look like they were expensive. See them here: http://fullofgreatideas.blogspot.com...have-made.html
Hope this helpsLast edited by stephanie73; Sun, Nov 21st, 2010 at 09:40 PM. Reason: typo :)

my aunt is a teacher I often wonder what to get her but I often always think of her and her students more then just her herself...
they have some of those mugs out there that explain what a teacher is I think they are pretty cool.
Yet when I was going to College last year and it was the end of my program me and my other grads got our teacher one of those mugs you write on then bake in the oven to seal words on so you can drink out of it and keep the words forever almost. Someone found it at Starbucks for about 14$ it was pretty cool.
I think it is pretty cool is those photo frames that are digital and it switches between pictures...
I suppose anything that works...but best if the kids ask the teacher what they think of a great present...thats always cute...Live, Love, Laugh

Another thing I have done is Wordle art. Wordle is a word cloud software that is free to use online. The more the word is said the larger it appears in the cloud.
So you go to this site: http://www.wordle.net/
and entered words that apply to the teacher. (Note it is easiest to create the list of words in Microsoft Word and then copy/paste into wordle)
What I did was went around the class and asked each of the kids what they think of when they think about their teacher. I entered the teachers name (4 or 5 times), the school name (3 or 4 times) and then added some additional words the kids didn't think of that I thought were appropriate. To make two words stay together in Wordle (like a first and a last name) use a ' ~ ' symbol instead of a space and they words will be stuck together.
Colour print it on glossy paper and frame the image in a 8x10 frame. The teacher has something they can hang in their classroom or on their door. Costs next to nothing since you can buy frames at the Dollar Store.
My kids teachers seemed to like it.

I remember when I was a kid, my mother insisted I give my teacher tea towels. I was so embarrassed until my teacher went nuts over this. She mentioned she gets so many mugs, but tea towels was what she really needed.

Perhaps a Timmies gift card?
Just like a $5 one. You can't go wrong with that! Or maybe an amazon card (I know some SC'ers get those free from swagbucks), that can be used for anything.
Maybe some really good, perhaps homemade cookies or chocolates.
If he's a subject-specific teacher then you can find something to suit his interests (ex. a good book or a chapters gift card for an English teacher).
I'd think anything that makes you feel cozy would be great too, like a nice throw/blanket.
Oh, and younger elementary school teachers always need stickers and craft supplies and sometimes I think it comes out of their pockets so a staples/michaels gift card or some stickers could help them out.
By the way, I thought this framed art was soo cute:
