Here's another angle of part of the Athlete's Village. BTW, the building on the left IS tilty looking. Arthur Ericksen designed it that way. And if some of today's pics look gloomy, it's because I was out and about just before dark. It was actually a bright and sunny day here in Vancouver.

Yes, the sign is Russian, in Cyrillic
Dobro pozhalovat' - english transliteration, soft 't' at the end
In general, it means welcome - but there's more to it - an expression of cordial greeting, esp to a person whose arrival is desired or pleasing.

In Ukrainian, it's "Vitaemo!" Вітаэмо!

Here's one of the official Olympic vehicles supplied by GM. I tried to get up close so you could see the design on the side. All around town is the familiar green and blue colours. These vehicles and the athletes and officials are common sights downtown now. Heck, I was in the Save On Foods nearest the athlete's village and the produce department had a dozen of them loading up on fresh fruit and whatnot. I'm sure they're well fed at the village, though.

Albertans will be interested to know that the Alberta pavilion (or "Alberta House" or whatever) occupies a very prime bit of real estate... right across the street from BC Place Stadium! I can't believe how they so quickly gave a facelift to this little dive of a bar that used to be called the "Doghouse" and made it into this. This place is going to be very busy. Hopefully serving up Alberta Beef on the BBQ! (now I'm hungry)

The hoards descended upon downtown Vancouver today (Saturday). This is a little bit of Robson Square with the new General Electric skating rink under the dome you see on the right. If you look up at the upper right corner, you'll see one end of a "zip line" that they've strung across the square for fun seekers. I heard that Premier Campbell has already tried it out.

BTW... what's all the blue stuff up above?

No sunrise yet in Vancouver. But we do have Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's "Vectorial Elevation" to watch. All night, every night until the end of the month, part of the "Cultural Olympiad". It's eery to see this light show dancing silently in the sky every time you look up. This is the view from my balcony and I'm probably about a mile away. Depending on atmospheric conditions, the light show can be seen for miles as it projects thousands of feet into the sky.

mcminsen, I feel so privileged that we have you as our official photographer! It's really SO kind of you to share these pics with us.
As for the asian sign, well, it's on the 'welcome' list I posted, lol - I wouldn't have known otherwise...
Those official cars are cool... btw, I have a very dead red 1988 Olympics Buick Skylark parked behind our house... any takers? She served me well in her time...
