When do you know it's the right time to start?
Should you use different approaches for boys and girls?

Both my girls were potty trained by 25 months, my nephew was not fully trained and still has accidents and he is 41/2. I have found that girls are easier and train earlier than boys. No different approach, except that might work for one child does not work for another.

With Aiden, after his second birthday we put him in pull ups, and introduced him to the toilet, had a special seat for him. By 27 months he was telling us he had to pee, by 30 months (2 1/2) he was trained... and he's only wet the bed once. (Knock on wood) My Nephew who is 5 months older wasn't trained until he was almost 3 1/2.

I had my boy trained by the age of two. I've never forced anything upon him. He was just interested and wanted it done. I think it helped he had older friends. He's now just turned 4 and still has to wear overnites. He sleeps so incredably deeply that he just simply does not wake up to pee.
My girl just turned 2 and has no interest at all. I've introduced the new furniture (potty) but she has yet to go. She will... in time. :?

The Mom Show on Life Network had a segment on this subject just today. Nanny Ribena suggested that typical potty training age is two to three years old. Best timing is to wait until baby is able to go at least three hours with a dry diaper (indicates that baby has some bladder control). Also suggested that potty training is easier to start during summer than winter, due to the "cold" factor.

Nanny advised that the potty training should be made a pleasant experience, with the toddler being given a toy to play with for the few minutes he is on the potty.

I will know next summer if the technique works (my baby is only three months old).

It really depends on the child. With my oldest we rewarded him with dinkie cars lol and he caught on quick. My youngest who is almost 16 months is already showing an interest in the potty. If you ask him if he has to pee, he will run to the bathroom. I think he is still too young, and believe that if they feel intimidated that it will prolong the process.

You just need to be patient, and be excited with them when they finally are successful with the potty.

My son once he turned 3 started to introduce him to the toilet got him a special potty... as he was going through nap times without wetting...

A friend told me what her family does and i tried it and it worked..he has only had a few accidents mainly because he wanted to long to go and he still wears over night diapers cause he is a deep sleeper and he never wakes up

I tried potty training when my daughter was 22-24 months...I gave up when she pooped twice beside the potty!! I put away the potty and only brought it back out when she wandered into the bathroom and removed her diaper. Once she did that, within 2 weeks she was all done with diapers, day and night!! She was 28 months at that point. Yes, she had the occasional accident, but washing a few pairs of undies and pants is more fun than changing dirty diapers!!

I have heard boys tend to train later, and I will be testing that out as my son is turning 1 in a few days. He too shows an interest in the toilet, however, it seems that that interest is mainly to test out what he can put in the toilet - last week it was his suce YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

All I know is Patience and perserverance.

We used a reward chart for Thomas trains and it worked so well. My son was fully trained at 2.8 days, and 2.10 nights.

We did the chart too and my son loved doing that once he got into it

My son is 3 1/2 and we are still struggling. He'll go when you change his diaper, at bedtime, in the morning. But he won't tell us when he has to go, and he's never pooed in the potty. I'm worried because he starts school in September. We've been trying the reward chart, but still struggling. Any suggestions??

What I found worked for my son was making it in to a game I know this may sound funny but it works, put cheerios in the potty and then he can stand like dad and shoot at them. Also I found instead of a Potty use the seats that sit on the toilet so then they are like you. Good luck it is hard stick with it

I used the cheerios as well!!
That and fruit loops.

They think it's such a wonderful little game.

I never bothered with the rewards charts and such.

The "potty" never worked for either of my older kids...I found the "toilet ring" was much better...

Im not sure why, but my kids never got the idea of what a potty was..funny little chair??
My son was fully trained at 2 years+1 week
Daughter was closer to 2.5

I remember having a conversation with my son about diapers, when I said "yucky diapers, those are for babies, go put them in the garbage" and he did...That was the last time he wore one...

No pull-ups, I find them confusing (imagine what they think?) - is it a diaper???...or not???
Im sure some have had good success with them, but not for me.

After peeing the pants a couple times, and actually getting "wet", he got the idea pretty fast (total training time, about 3 days)
But like I said daughter was 2.5, and before that she just wasn't ready...

Also, if your child is still drinking a bottle, or a sippy all the time, dont even try traning untill thier off it or limited to how often they can have it. A lot of sipping= a lot of peeing

Hayden likes to sit on the potty and make pooping noises-he thinks it's really funny.. ha ha... I read you have to wait til they go through a nap without wetting a diaper and he does each time (have a wet one that is). Think it's too soon to try ? I LOVE the Cheerio idea !!!
