She felt better when cashiers started confiding that they were using coupons too.
Canadians are not big coupon users yet, says Christian Dion, senior director of business development for couponclick.ca, a printable coupon website being launched this fall.
But everyone likes a deal, especially in a recession, and Canadians are beginning to discover that coupons can save them money.
And that's leading to the development of websites, clubs and informal ways of stretching the consumer's shopping dollar through coupons.
There are two aspects to the movement: Getting coupons, and exchanging coupons and information about how to use them.
Dion, who's based in Burlington, Ont., says there are three ways to get a coupon: Clip from a flyer, print it out from a website, and order it online for delivery by mail.
Coupon websites are becoming more popular.
Dion says couponclick.ca will offer a first in Canada: secure, print-controlled coupons. Users will have to register, and the company will be able to control how many coupons are printed and track which ones get used.
But people these days are doing more than just using coupons: They are finding ways to exchange them.
Doucette, for example, is part of an Ottawa-based "coupon train" -- an envelope full of coupons that is sent from person to person.
When she gets a package, she goes through it and takes out the coupons she can use. Before sending the envelope to the next person on the list, she replaces the coupons she's taken with those of equal or greater value.
"It's a great way to get coupons that may not be in stores near you," says Doucette.
How to find out about coupon trains and coupon exchanges? Through consumer websites such as smartcanucks.ca.
Smartcanucks has a whole section on coupon trains and coupon trading, where people with coupons they can't use exchange them for others that are more useful to them.
And for consumers looking for tricks, Smartcanucks has a section dedicated to brags, in which consumers post their successful deals.
Debbie Watson, a moderator on the website, says she has posted brags showing how she bought $50 worth of groceries and paid -- literally -- only a penny.
How did she do it?
Everything goes on sale, says Watson. So if you have a coupon that gives you, say, $2 off, and the item is discounted to $1.99, you literally get it for free.
"I do it all the time," she says.
