Elliott concedes to Ford in PC leadership contest

Christine Elliott has conceded defeat to Doug Ford nearly 24 hours after he was declared the winner of a tight leadership contest to helm the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party. Following a meeting with Ford yesterday, a statement released appeared to put to rest any notion that she would continue a challenge to his win after the chaotic leadership convention on Saturday. Elliot had initially said she won the popular vote and the majority of ridings, adding thousands of party members were assigned to incorrect ridings during the voting process.

OPP to focus on inattentive, distracted drivers over March break

Another blitz targeting distracted drivers kicks off today and just in time for March Break. Police are out with some scary numbers too, reminding motorists about the dangers of using hand held devices while behind the wheel. Distracted drivers were behind 83 road deaths on OPP-patrolled roads last year - - that’s more than speed-related fatalities, alcohol and drug-related deaths and deaths with drivers that didn't wear a seat belt.

Raptors roll to 8th straight, rout Knicks

Jonas Valanciunas scored 17 points, Kyle Lowry had 16 and the Toronto Raptors kept right on rolling after a big win two nights earlier, beating the New York Knicks 132-106 on Sunday for their season-high eighth straight victory.

Elon Musk says SpaceX Mars rocket may make first flight as soon as next year

Elon Musk says the first stage of SpaceX’s mission to Mars could happen as soon as next year.
Speaking during a surprise question-and-answer session at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, the chief executive of SpaceX and Tesla Inc. TSLA, +0.35% said “we are building the first Mars, or interplanetary ship, and I think well be able to do short trips, short up and down flights, by first half of next year,” although he acknowledged he tends to have overly optimistic timelines.
When he announced his Mars plans last year, Musk said he aimed to land cargo shipments on Mars by 2022, followed by the first colonists. Musk said Sunday that life will not be easy for the first Martians. “For the early people that go to Mars, it will be far more dangerous. It kind of reads like Shackleton’s ad for Antarctic explorers: Difficult, dangerous, good chance you’ll die. Excitement for those who survive,” he said
But Musk also said he plans to build amenities for future Mars colonists.

Musk’s Mars aspirations hinge on the BFR — Big Falcon Rocket, or perhaps another word that begins with F — which is currently under development. Musk said the BFR will be reusable, capable of interplanetary travel and will eventually be cheaper to operate than SpaceX’s original Falcon 1 rocket — about $5 million to $6 million per launch.
Musk has been an outspoken advocate of colonizing Mars, and warned Sunday that the future of humanity may depend on it.

“There’s likely to be another dark ages . . . particularly if there’s a third world war,” he said. If that happens, mankind must make sure “there’s enough of a seed of human civilization to bring human civilization back.”
Musk also issued another warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence: “I’m very close to the cutting edge in AI and it scares the hell out of me. It’s capable of vastly more than almost anyone knows, and the rate of improvement is exponential.”
“AI is far more dangerous than nukes,” he said. “If humanity collectively decides that creating digital superintelligence is the right move, then we should do so very, very carefully. This is the most important thing that we can possibly do.”
