Hwy 401 EB Collectors lanes reopen between Avenue Rd and Yonge St

There was some early morning trouble on HWY 401. All eastbound collector lanes had been closed between Yonge and Bayview because of a police investigation but have now reopened. One person fell and was then was found underneath the highway. It happened near Yonge street around 2am. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ontario appeal court to hear arguments on staying Toronto council cut ruling

The battle of the province versus the city continues today. The Ontario government will be in court seeking a stay of a court decision that upended the province's plans to cut Toronto city council nearly in half in the middle of an election campaign. Last week it was ruled bill 5, which slashed Toronto’s council by nearly half, violated the rights of both candidates and voters. Premier Doug Ford has since reintroduced the bill and invoked a constitutional provision known as the notwithstanding clause to forge ahead with the council-cutting plan. If the province is successful, city staff would then immediately start planning for an election based on the 25-ward model rather than 47. Now the premier won’t be in court himself, instead Doug Ford will be in Chatham for an international plowing match. He and rival Andrea Horwath will be taking part. There's a long-standing tradition of having political leaders take part in the contest to see who's best able to plow in a straight line.

Maple Leafs pre-season begins tonight against Senators

The puck drops on the Maple Leafs pre-season tonight as they play the Ottawa Senators at the Lucan Community Memorial Centre, just north of London, Ontario. Still no word on whether any progress has been made in contract talks with William Nylander. He and the club remain at a stalemate when it comes to both term and money.

Court to rule Wednesday morning on bill to slash Toronto council

Ontario’s Court of Appeal is expected to decide this morning whether it will stay a lower-court decision that nixed the provincial government's plan to cut Toronto city council nearly in half amid an election campaign. The ruling is expected to come down at 10am this morning.

Gas prices dip 5 cents in GTA

Drivers are waking up to cheaper prices at the pump. The price of gas dropped about 5-cents overnight, taking the average price of regular to the lowest price we’ve seen since March. The average price in the GTA is just under $1.25 a litre.
