The Christie Sand Pits were rich in sand, gravel and clay deposits - remnants of the last ice age. These deposits were excavated in the late 1800's and early 1900's and used in the construction of many of Toronto's early roadways and public buildings.

By 1909, the Christie Sand Pits were depleted and the city turned the former quarry into Willowvale Park. However, the Christie Pits name has endured and is used in reference to the park as well as the surrounding neighbourhood to this day.
Hey Wolfie! Thanks for the pic and story! I grew up in the neighbourhood and Christie Pits was my favourite place to be. It will always be Christie Pits and it's nice to know why.

if you wait a bit and move the white bar thingy to 15:30 you
    will get to hear this:

READING: AL MAITLAND "THE HOMECOMING"Duration: 00:10:54Tonight, as we approach Remembrance Day, we bring you a story of war -- not the battle, but the end of it.
Here is former As It Happens host Alan Maitland reading "The Homecoming." It was written by a veteran of the Second World War named Bert Harper. And "Fireside Al" first read it on this program in 1992.

This is a very emotional day, moreso each year as I get older.
I am remembering my wonderful Grandfather who served our country in WWII and luckily came home to his wife and 3 children, the younger two a set of twins that he didn't recognize because they were newborn we he left. (One of those twins is my Dad.)
Grandad needed to go and serve his country. Today and every day I remember him with his smiling eyes and good-natured, gentle demeanor. Always quick with a joke, or if I was hurt and crying as a child he would ask me if I wanted him to stomp on my foot so I'd forget about my other pains. And he called me Pickles. I miss him so much.
My Granny is still with us and she is 97 years old.

    Good morning, everyone.

Off to the theatre tonight. I wish the programming dept would have arranged for a special performance of Billy Bishop for today. Alas, my whims are never listened to.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day.
