When I was a kid, listening to 1050 CHUM, we had a rotary dial phone which was a disadvantage on the contests. The lucky ones were those who owned "push button" or "Contempra" phones, as they were called back then.

OMG - I'd completely forgotten about those. I remember thinking our neighbours were so cool when they had one installed - only to find out it looked like a Contempra, but actually had a tiny rotary instead of buttons!!

I think I'm ready for a nap. I ran into some doggy neighbours when I went to get the mail. Nothing like having a pair of Dobermans trying to kiss ya.

The rotary phone was perhaps better for calling in way back, depending on the switching gear you had to get through.
If you held the number after you rotated it, you could increase your chances of catching your way through the old analog switch gear.
The theory was less calls, but increased probability of finding a connection.
Once the switching went to digital all advantage was lost.
I remember when it changed in our part of Scarborough, we lost our Axminster (29_) number series.
But I never understood why Willowdale got to kept the Baldwin (22_) series?
