1908 – New York City passes the Sullivan Ordinance, making it illegal for women to smoke in public, only to have the measure vetoed by the mayor.

1948 – The of Quebec is adopted and flown for the first time over the National Assembly of Quebec. The day is marked annually as Quebec Day.
1977 – President of the United States Jimmy Carter pardons nearly all American Vietnam War draft evaders, some of whom had emigrated to Canada.

1941 – Richie Havens, American singer-songwriter and guitarist (d. 2013)



His Woodstock appearance in 1969 catapulted him into stardom and was a major turning point in his career.^[2] As the festival's first performer, he held the crowd for nearly three hours. In part, Havens was told to continue playing, because many artists scheduled to perform after him were delayed in reaching the festival location with highways at a virtual standstill. He was called back for several encores. Having run out of tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual Motherless Child that became Freedom. The subsequent Woodstock movie release helped Havens reach a worldwide audience.

Good morning, everyone.

Went out to the burbs yesterday to check on my Mom (she's fine) and do some paperwork to cancel my Dad's car insurance. Sigh. Seems like it never ends.


On the plus side, I got late last night and spent an hour chatting with some neighbours (and snacking ). On the minus side, I just found out a gal I know is going through a difficult time - her Mom is in the final stages of brain cancer (diagnosed only 3 weeks ago). Any prayers and good thoughts you can spare would be most appreciated.


Going to go play with the critters once they finally wake up - what a change from screaming at me at 4am in the burbs wanting food. I guess they realize their drill sergeant is back.
