Doug Ford moves forward with plan to slash Toronto City Council

City council here in Toronto is scrambling yet again. Councillors will gather today for an emergency meeting to consider their next move after the Ford government moved to revive a bill that would slash council nearly in half. Ford invoked a constitutional provision to make sure bill 5 moves forward. It would slash the size of council nearly in half just weeks ahead of the municipal election. Protesters shouted at the premier as he defended the decision in the legislature Wednesday, prompting the speaker to clear the public galleries. The new bill -- the efficient local government act -- says the nomination deadline for candidates seeking to run in the October 22nd election would be set for two days after the legislation passes.

Humboldt Broncos unveil 29 banners to honour passengers of bus crash

The Humboldt Broncos organization held a post-game tribute and memorial banner ceremony to honour the 29 people involved in the tragic bus crash on April 6. It was a step towards healing for the Humboldt community and everyone affected on Wednesday night. The unveiling was held, along with a video tribute, for 29 banners with the names of the victims on the 2017-18 Broncos’ bus. Six emergency service personnel were at the ceremony as the organization thanked over 150 first responders who came to the team’s aid five months ago. The only returning Broncos’ players from the previous season are Brayden Camrud and Derek Patter, who dropped the puck in a ceremony before the home opener. It was a sold-out crowd against the Nipawin Hawks, who came back and held on to win 2-1.

Nylander not on Leafs' 73-man camp roster

Hockey is unofficially back for Maple Leafs fans as it is the eve of training camp. The club will undergo medicals here in Toronto before hitting the ice at Gale Centre in Niagara Falls, tomorrow. Not on the list of 73 players attending camp is William Nylander, the star winger who reportedly remains in Sweden without a contract, and word is the club and player remain quite a ways apart in terms of dollars and term. The Leafs officially kick off pre-season play against Ottawa on Tuesday.
