Certain phrases are bothering me...

I have a friend that always pronounces the word "both" with an L so he says "bolth"...it drives me crazy. I tell him to spell both...b-o-t-h...then say both, but it is always "bolth".

ok one thing i figured out fairly recently had me feeling a little bad actually.

my parents came to Canada from south asia 40+ years ago. they pronounce some things and use some words that just drive me bonkers. throw in a little bit of an accent and it really throws you off!

I have come to realize quite recently that they were actually pronouncing these words correctly. the way they are supposed to be pronounced! their pronounciations, phrasing and vocab were BRITISH english. (india was under brit occupation for 200+ yrs)

i was the one who wasn't speaking correctly!! (north american english)

I have that problem. I'm an ex-pat Brit so my English is slightly different from the norm here.

People misusing decimate now bugs me for some reason. Like almost everyone else I thought it meant the same as devastate until some etymology nazi pointed out what it actually means on the CBC news message boards last year (historically, anyway). It's Latin, meaning to take one in 10. So if, for example, a farmer's crop was decimated by a storm that would mean 10% of it was lost. Rather than the completely destroyed that most use the word for.

^^Anyone notice I just ended the last sentence there with a preposition?
