Just a few thoughts:
1. Safeway had (and I stress had) a reputation for being over-priced. That is in the past and you'll often find Safeway more than competitive especially when you include the average value of AirMiles offered on heavily discounted manufacturers weekly specials. In fact over the last few weeks it was possible to get more in value in AirMiles than it cost to buy the product.
2. The average value of an AirMiles to the consumer is approximately $0.14. Using an average value helps one determine a comparative value to the same product in other stores. The most popular method of valuing AirMiles I find is to take a product and determine how much it cost to buy an AirMile with it.
This could lead to two products: A costing $0.20 and Airmile and B costing $2.00 an Airmile.
To my mind valuing AMs this way just encourages people to buy as much a product A rather than B. People could end up buying for the sake of getting AirMiles rather than products they use at good prices or can donate to charity cost effectively. But how do you know if A is a good deal.
Here's a chance for AirMiles collectors to help with the earthquake relief in Haiti:
Every 200 AMs donated = $25 to Canadian Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund

Jan. 31 - Feb. 6 :
In the following first number is sale price. Second number is effective value based on $0.14/AM). If there is a multiple offer, ie, B3G15 & B6G45 a third number corresponds to the value of the extra offer.
With effective valuing you can compare the relative prices of a product after accounting for the AirMiles against the same product in another store. For example,
If Coca-Cola is $2.00 with 10 Airmiles it has an effective value of $0.60 [$2 - (10 x $0.14)]. If another store is selling the same product for $1 you know the effect of the AirMiles beats that price.
Print off a copy of the following to take comparison shopping.

Note: Safeway has started another 4 week booklet. Generally I ignore these products as they are often boosted in price.
Also, read the booklet carefully as the wording on some products can be a bit misleading.
For example in week one it looks like "Chef Boyardee Pasta" is $1 with enough AMs to bring the price effectively to $0.30/tin.
If you look closer though it doesn't say the price is $1. When you read the small print it says $1 off with no actual price given.
Let me know if I've missed anything.
Also, if you do use your AMs for flights instead of products in all likelihood you can set the effective prices lower. However, it is always a good thing to cross reference with an Airlines website prices to make sure. Don't forget you pay the taxes extra.
Finally, to all of you who have thanked me for this thread, thank you back as well.

Definitely some coupon deals/Air Mile deals to consider:
- Secret deoderant, if it's Secret Flawless - there's $1.50 P&G coupon making this 30 cents after coupon/Air Miles so good to donate. There is also $1 wub 2 from save.ca and until Jan 31 75 cents off ANY secret from Rouge booklet. Good deal for donations.
- Tylenol, Motrin, Benylin or Motrin Cold, Listerine 6.99/6.06/5.59 - there are coupons for most of these and I *think*?? there's some high value Motrin printables still kicking around as well as $2 Tylenol coupon good on any.
- Stayfree Pads 3.33/2.40/1.93 -- best deal for donations - use the save $5 wub 2 from P&G or save.ca so if you buy 6. The $5 coupons are for "regular" price so not sure if this is a "sale" price or not.
6*3.33= $19.98 - 3*$5 coupons = $4.98 - (60 AM 8.40) = - 3.42. so you'll be paid to shop and donate.
- Yoplait Event B5G40 is also pretty good after coupons (82 cents). There are lots of 50 cents ones floating about - some in the store, and ones you can order from gocoupons.ca
Yoplait Yogurt, Minigo, Tubes 2.50/1.32
AirWick iMotion or Freshmatic 7.99/7.06/6.82 - there are a few $5 off coupons for this. They were peelie style coupons attached to the box.
Sunlight Det. B2G25 5.99/4.24 -- there's a $2(coupon insert) and $3(Parent's magazine) and $1.50 off coupons (manufacturer and ones attached to the bottle) plus MIR offer - one per household for Sunlight Green

I never shop at Safeway because I think it's too much $$ so I don't have a safeway card. My hubby stopped by to get me a couple of quick items though and he got a Texas Hold'Em card. I went to put the pin in but I think I need a safeway card to even instantly win ... anyone want the pin? 1st to PM

Do they have this booklet available in store?
Or, just you can look at it here:
http://safeway.ca.inserts2online.com...?drpStoreID=80
Note, as I said the offers in the booklet are rarely good.
Turns out the Chef Boyardee are $2 each.
$1 off should bring them to $1 each with 5 AMs/tin.
Effectively this brings the price to around $0.30 - $0.375/tin depending on how you value an AM. How does that compare with other stores?
I used $0.125 to get $0.375/tin. $0.125 is common on many gift cards.

darn...just what I expected...my 3 points went through this morning (I've been checking every day for the past 2 weeks) and today also my rewards are no longer available. I'll have to keep checking and hoping it comes back (and comes back at the reduced rate too would be nice - it was for theme park tix).

I just bought the Lucerne 4L skim milk for I believe $4.06 on Tuesday and I don't buy the Dairyland skim milk as I think it's at least $5.19 or $5.69. I find the price of their milk really jumped up in price around the summer time, but went back down. I remember getting it for about $3.86 for the longest period of last in 2009.
