Yes, they should be able to issue a tax receipt IF you have the grocery receipt to go with it. That is required. Can't just show up to the food bank and declare a value (as it's likely people would declare a higher price than they actually paid). The receipt shows the actual outlay of cash and verifies the value of the product.
    Omie,

    Agreed.

What I'm getting at is people need to confirm their food bank does this as not all do.

No sense buying a $100 worth of food for them only to find out they won't give you a tax receipt. Phome them first to confirm they will.

Check with your local FBs first as not all give tax receipts.

In fact, every accountant I talk to says "in kind" donations can't be accepted. It must be cash. However, I do know my FB will issuw a tax receipt in exchange for the grocery receipt.

yes, Gifts in kind is allowed by CRA. see the CRA doc below:

Now is this deal once per transaction or could I buy 9 boxes of Granola bars and get 3 free juice in one trip???????

You're right about "In Kind" but there was something about donating groceries in this manner that was an issue. I'll ask my accountant.

It is one per transaction though not one per club card so you can do three transactions and get 3 free.
Better yet, if you use this coupon

you can get 1 trop 50 and 1 tropicana juice with purchase of 3 boxes of Granola bars.

I went today and bought 6 boxes of granola bars and got 2 juice free, all in one transaction, your club card will automatically deduct the price of juices. I am going to go back on Thursday to get some more.

It could also be a matter of different policies at different food banks. You are 100% right, OB, not a bad idea to phone and ask. Again, the point is to be able to donate with the least out of pocket as possible (or none). A phone call to the local Food Bank is free, and should only take a couple minutes of your time. I would certainly feel bad if someone went and bought a bunch of cereal specifically on my scenario, and their local food bank doesn't do that.

When you say your accountant told you that about donating groceries in this manner that was an issue. Did he say it is a problem with the food bank not issuing the tax receipt or CRA not accepting the tax receipt even though the food bank issued them?

    a,

    Heard it from 2 accountants.

CRA doesn't allow it but the FBs are doing it anyway.

I gather the FBs are treating it as a cash donation and they went out and bought the food. Hard to say otherwise.

You're getting a real tax receipt.

My FB receipts actually say Gift in Kind and lists what I actually donate, i.e. cereals, juice, toilet paper, etc..
When the accountants say CRA doesn't allow it, do they mean CRA doesn't allow any kind of gift in kind in general or CRA doesn't allow gift in kind with grocery? Gift in kind is allowed as described in the CRA website doc I posted earlier.

I just called CRA and told them the exact situation that I buy grocery from a store and donate them to a FB. The FB issues a tax receipt to me as gift in kind. CRA told me it is ok as long as the FB issues the receipt.

Stopped by my local Safeway last night. With the bonus AM coupon, my outlay was $100 exactly, and I got 655 AM. Not too bad
