Just picked up 2 Ivory 10 bar packages.

They are BoGo with 20 bonus Airmiles @ $3.99 each.

    Total: $3.99 not counting tax

    Used two $0.75 P&G BrandSaver coupons ($1.50)

    Cost: $2.49

    20 Bonus AirMiles approximately = $2.80

I made $0.31 and have 20 bars of soap! ;-)

    OK, Safeway has a Buy 3 Get 50 AirMiles on Christies Cookies (550g) @ $4.99 each. You'd have to spend $14.97 to get the 50 AMs and you'r only getting 16.67 AMs/bag (50/3) = $2.33/bag

However, the e-mail.direct has a coupon for Buy 2 Get 50 AMs on Dad's cookies (600g) also $4.99 each

    http://www.safeway.ca/emaildirect/of...ct_38_2008.pdf

    You only have to spend $9.98 and you're getting 25 AMs/bag = $3.50/bag

Also you get 9.1% more cookies (600g vs. 550g)

Dad's is by far the superior deal this week.

Others that seemed OK to me:

Primo Canned Tomatos $2.28 reg $1.75 on sale buy 4 get 15 AMs which is approx. $0.53/tin in AMs.

    Johnsonville Brats 450g $5.59 on sale $3.99 B3G25 approx $1.16 in AMs/package.

Here's a good example of how to be careful with Safeway's AirMiles promotions. Someone posted this page from Walmart's pre-anniversary flyer:

    <DT class=wp-caption-dt> </DT>
It's hard to read but I assume this is on the 350g packages of Christie's cookies.

    <HR style="COLOR: #ffffff; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" SIZE=1> <!-- / icon and title --><!-- NuHit--><!-- / NuHit--><!-- message -->
    OK, Safeway has a Buy 3 Get 50 AirMiles on Christies Cookies (550g) @ $4.99 each. You'd have to spend $14.97 to get the 50 AMs. 50 AMs approx = $7 in AMs so effective cost is $14.97 - $7.00 = $7.97 for 1650g or $0.48/100/g ($7.97/16.5)

    Walmart's $1.47/350g = $0.42/100g

Mind you if it's a 300g bag then Safeway beats by a penny.

Still, the Dad's cookie deal is better.

However, if you use the AMs to buy something with a value greater than $0.14/AM (eg., 2 for 1 movie tickets $0.33/AM to $0.40/AM then Safeway is best bet in both cases).

    OB,

You are a numbers freak after my heart!!! I love your break down on the cost per AM! I've always wanted to make sure I'm not ripping myself off and now I come here to get the goods from you! I was planning on buying the Dads cookies so it sounds like I was on the right track, LOL! Thanks for crunching those numbers for us!

Just got home from Safeway earlier tonight with 144 airmiles for $61.47, Not Bad eh? I bought a GC with my BMO M/C, that gave me 2 from BMO, 2 from Safeway and the cashier screwed up and gave me the bonus 10 for purchasing a GC worth $50. Then I bought the tomatoes for 15 bonus, the Dads Cookies for 50, Pampers for 40, I had a lucky break winner worth 10. I got 3 for my $60 purchase from Safeway but I also used a 5X coupon so ended up with 15. So it adds up to around 144 airmiles. It cost me $0.43 per airmile tonight. I had coupons that I used for the pampers that made them a good deal for me.

I can almost taste the coffee I'm going to make with my new Krups coffee maker come Christmas time at this rate...

    Not bad.

    144 AM approx = $20.16

    $20.16/$61.47 = 32.8%

If you just just those AMs for 2 for 1 movie ticket you'd be around 90% savings elsewhere.

Just received a mail out solicitation for a new paid for AMEX credit card.

Normally, I don't bother with these as they aren't that great a value. This one I might opt for though.

Fee: $50 but you get 350 AMs = $49 value (first year only)

The normal rate on AMEX cards is 1 AM per $20 on the free card and $1 AM per $15 on the paid.

This card though is 1 AM per $10 at sponsors and 1 AM per $15 everywhere else. (plus the extras: travel insurance, etc.).

On your purchase at Safeway with this card your base AMs would have been 6.

With you 5Xs coupon you'd pick up 30 AMs an extra 15 worth $2.10

From the e-mail direct these non-advertised AirMile, etc. specials. They usually send it out PDF but not this time so I was able to Cut & Paste:

Allright. Didn't go for any e-mail direct specials this week but just came back from Safeway.

    6 Linguine 900g
    3 Pizza Sauce
    1 Spaghetti Sauce
    2 T-Bone Steaks (Discount bin 30% off)
    2 Johnsonvile Suasages 454 g (Discount bin $1.99 each)

    Total bill: $43

    Bonus Offers 2 x 50 Airmiles = 100 AMs
    Scrapin's posted coupon 50 AirMiles
Credit card: 2 AMs (possibly 4 as I upgraded my card)

    Total AMs: 152
Approx. Value: $21.56 which is approx. 50% of amount spent

If I don't count the meat, as I only used it to get to $40 for Scrapin's coupon and the meat didn't have AirMiles anyway it the savings elsewhere are about 65% or more.

Also, Safeway has higher prices than Loblaw's but even if it was a 20% difference then that's $8.60 off the $43.

    $21.56 - $8.60 = almost $13 savings elsewhere on a purchase of $43 which is still 30% ahead.

Also, there's a Zellers on the way to Safeway. I checked out pasta there first: Primo 450g = $1.19 so 900g = $2.38

The Catelli at Safeway is $2.49/900g so it's $0.11 more but it comes with 10 AMs = approx. $1.40 so if you collect AMs you're $1.27/900g better off at Safeway.

    Why $1.27 instead of $1.29?

Zellers points are worth about 1% of purchase so I included that amount in the comparison as well.

Was just in Wal-Mart picking up new glasses.

The same spaghetti sauce was on for $0.01 less than Safeway (but no loyalty points).

The linguine was more than at Safeway although they had no-name brands on for $1.19/450g (equivalent to $2.30/900g).

Wow OB I love your numbers!! had to read it a couple of times before I really understood; numbers are not my strong suit. I am with you on feeling the value with airmiles blows the competition out of the water for $ well spent.

    Shop,

They've changed the URL to reflect different offers in different provinces:

    http://www.safeway.ca/emaildirect/of...8_BC_AB_SM.pdf

Not much that interests me this time except the Pantene. If you have the P&G Brandsaver coupon Buy 2 Get $2.50 it reduces it to $0.25/bottle.

In the flyer they have a new line of baby products B5G50 I think. As a new line prices should be good so the bonus should be good especially if you add in the 50 AMs on $40 coupon previously posted.

    safeway.ca/emaildirect/offers/emaildirect_40_2008_BC_AB_SM.pdf

As the website truncated the long URL I'm posting this fragment so we can add it to:

    http://www.

next week to see if we can see what the specials are by changing the 40 to 41.
