my 4 year old comes up with craziest stuff, i thought i was smart but he stumps me!

    questions he has asked me....

    1. why is fire hot?
    2. what are our bones made of?
    3. whats in water?

to name just a few. how do they come up with this stuff?? i usually have to tell him i dont know but ill find out and get back to him but its pretty hard to tell a 4 year old that water is made from 1 part oxygen and 2 parts hydrogen lol. by the time this kid is 10 i am going to know EVERYTHING!

what kinds of questions have your curious kids asked?

Oh, I know how that is, I had an inquisitive kid as well - he's still that way. Answer the best you can - and there's nothing wrong with saying I don't know.

Another thing I would do was make up answers, too - just for the fun of me and my husband... and some have lasted as jokes til even now.

ishy, let me tell you as a primary teacher, we get TONS of questions and do the best we can with them! However, there are some that have to be turned back to the parents, if you know what I mean...

Oh yes, they tend to be a curious bunch at that age Sometimes I think us adults could take a lesson from the little ones, because sometimes I feel we aren't curious enough.

My oldest son is 4 years old, just started JK this fall and yes he is curious. It's neat to see the things that capture his attention. Like one day, it was hydro poles and I had to explain that to him the best I could. I think the funniest was when he became curious as to why I didn't have a "boy part" LOL

My daughter asked why Santa has the same wrapping paper as us. I had to quickly come up with an answer: He ran out of paper and had to use ours! I still remember our gift wrapping ritual...I would wrap and my husband write out the labels, with disguised handwriting, of course. Being procrastinators, we would do this late Christmas Eve.

We never talked down to the children, always answered their questions to the best of our ability. I find that if one parent can't answer, the other usually can. I remember one time, our oldest son asked dad how light bulbs worked. He was only 2 at the time, but my husband gave him the scientific explanation. Sometimes it's difficult to be married to an engineer.

It's much easier now in the internet age. I know I drove my parents mad with inane questions when I was younger.

Now I can just look it up online.

My daughter isn't into specifics yet, but everything we drive by in the car you can be sure to hear from the back seat "Whasssssssssssssssat!!??" and if you don't answer, she keeps repeating it in an angrier and angrier tone LOL

my son is never satisfied with a basic answer so i just explain things simply but as detailed as possible. i figure, i dont really know how much he understands so i just give him all the info and let him sort it out.
