All busy sites get spam, we don't have enough mods for them to manually approve all posts by someone under 20 posts like some sites do, and not allowing linking for them means they could not post deals, which may be the reason they came here.
So SC relies on ppl to use the report button and a mod removes it - they are always removed, so it doesn't allow spam, but there is only so much a few mods can do while still eating/sleeping and maybe even occasionally seeing their children/working, you know, their real lives

thanks fp - i do understand the sleep part and life in general,
so why not take the 'mods in charge' part off: since they are
sleeping, living etc.
if no one watches what is posted?

if it's just me mentioning this - sorry
but sometimes i look into sc and i see a lot of threads - for a place
that leads to spam. and i'm perturbed that someone who didn't know better could get lost

Are there special mods just for handling reports and others just for handling new accounts?
I would think it's more difficult to go through dozens of reports (I probably report at least 6 times myself at night in the 12am to 2am EST period when I'm on) than to approve the posts of new accounts. Give the spammers work to do instead of handing a pass to them, you know what I mean?

I'm under the impression that isn't how Boo wants the site to work. Also I'm not sure how many people sign up on a given day so manual checking of each and every post made by a newbie would take up a lot of a mod's time. I'm here several hours a day and I don't read every thread started or added to each day as it's far too much work.
Plus if you allow new members x-number of modded posts before they are allowed to be mod-free, they'll most likely just spam up the board with links in thier siggies.
eta unless you want links in siggies removed totally.Last edited by Darth Penguin; Sat, Jan 21st, 2012 at 12:13 PM. Reason: eta

I actually use the New Posts filter to view this site. I used to go forum by forum but havent for months. I guess you can say I see almost all the new boards made when I'm on lol. Which is why I'm able to send so many reports at night. The spam boards get clumped together.
With my phone, sometimes it feels like i visit this site like 20 times a day haha.
As for the modded post system. Normally, a mod has to approve the post before it is visible so they wouldn't be able to spam with their siggy either since the post would be pending.
I understand what you mean, though, about different people wanting to run their sites how they want.

Why do you have to be so rude to us Madchives. Your wording on issues is always off.
Of course we care. and all us mods work on removing the spam. Being a popular site we are targeted by spammers more and spend lots of time removing them.
We also block whole sites from being posted etc. These spammers use static ips so we can't just block an ip. The spam you posted was posted at 4 30 am this morning. Lets be realistic here, of course they aren't going to be removed until the morning.
Restrictions on new posters isn't good for real people either.Last edited by Sally888; Sat, Jan 21st, 2012 at 02:16 PM.

Jeniana, Caring, Amberlab and myself are here a lot. Sorry if we leave the computer to eat or live or sleep and are not here 24/7 . If you find a super human that doesn't have to eat, sleep or have any life off the computer and can be here 24/7 please do let me know. Otherwise then yes, there will be hours when mods aren't here.

If it is like the DVD spam where it is the same person with say 6 spammy posts, I just report the one and say spam x 6 so the mods are not getting 6 emails about reports, they can easily click on the name (and likely when they delete the member, it deletes their posts etc)

Although it's great that boards like this have moderation (it prevents us from becoming 4chan - thank gods!) this is a HUGE site and the mods can't be here all the time to protect us from the big, bad, world.
As *adults* (I'm assuming most of us anyways) using the internet, we need to take some personal responsibility for not "getting lost", or making sure that we are careful about the links we click on when things slip past...Like Tea? sorry if i sounded pissy - but this keeps coming up.
i remember last summer me and not sure who else - could
almost guess the time this sort of ppphhhttt shows up.
it's a timing thing - right now 10 spam threads in entertainment
then again hopefully gone by now.
i'm not the most computer literate but - sc could figure out
how to stop this crap a few ways i'd think - a mod
or a person who knows what's crap and can do something,
(delete thread)
or some software that wouldn't allow the thread.
or not allow anyone to start a thread til they seem to be ok ?
(oh crap i'm not allowed to start a thread)
my intentions are always good - i don't want some newbie as
i was a few years ago to get into crap and sc wouldn't either,
was my point - as badly i pronounce it.

The past few weeks the spam in the morning is crazy!! Half the new posts are filled with them. The mods are doing great but more mods would be better so there is more coverage.
