Mine is only food. It's such a small thing that they can't give other stuff. But the women's shelter, men's shelter and the youth drop in all take other stuff.

Yeah same here, its a tiny foodbank and they take just dry foods

we don't have a local men's shelter but in the last few weeks, I dropped off 48 cans of soup, 10 Old Dutch Chips and 16 Knorr Sidekicks to the foodbank

and 10 gift bags with these (or similar brands) to the women's shelter and threw a bag of Old Dutch into them too

Instead of the Food Bank my things will be going to the local young parents association here called "The Rose of Durham" they provide counseling to young parents. They have a cupboard of personal care items for the parents that include deodorants, body washes, kotex products, baby items everything we are getting for "free".. as well as there is always the United Way and the Salvation Army if your Food Bank will not take stuff...

That sounds like a great group to give to

As far as United Way, Salvation Army and the like, I refer smaller groups who do not spend 35%+ of their monetary donations on administration for any donation - even food and the like. My local united way spends 15% on administration compared to 35% at the Salvation Army (and my new beef with them is sunshine bags to prisoners using the victims fund money) - guess which one gets my donation!

I put together a huge box after seeing this thread and checking on the "Feed the Need" website for most needed items. My closest drop-off is the Salvation Army right in town, I'll take the stuff over tomorrow as they are only open Mon. and Thurs. My dh and I also put together 4 big boxes and bought turkeys for a specific family for Christmas through St. Vincent de Paul's. So at first I was thinking that I really didn't want to give away any more of my "stash" but then I got a bunch of Old Spice and Greenworks and thought about how much we have and how little others have. Merry Christmas everyone, great thread, thanks nancyrose!

That's very nice of you! I didn't even know we had a Salvation Army in Bowmanville! DH & I have been donating to Simcoe Settlement House because he volunteers there occasionally.
