I think that if someone did that to me, I would end up behind bars for a little bit! Either that or a nice rubber room with a nice huggy jacket on!

Obviously this is not a good week for our family and banks! My son (theweave=Chris) went to the casino tonight. He goes to the bank machine to take out money and it says "transaction denied". Chris is like "that is weird..." so he goes downstairs and phones Royal bank. The girl says that his bank card was "ged" probably out of suspicious circumstances. Chris tells her that there is nothing going on with his account because he literally just checked it before he left the house. So the girl puts him on hold and comes back and says that it should be fine now, just wait 5 or 10 minutes then try. So he goes and fools around for a bit, then goes back and tries. Same thing... so he phones again. This time the guy tells him that it is the machines at the casino are rejecting his card for some reason. He suggests going to a RBC ATM instead. So he goes out and s a cab and goes to the RBC which is only 2 minutes away. He goes in and puts in his card, types in his pin and it says "transaction declined"! So then he takes a cab back to the casino as he figures something ain't jiving here (yes he admits he should have just come home at that point!). He goes and phones again. This guy proceeds to tell him that the card is marked again for fraud because "he is trying to take money out and is getting declined" Chris tells him "Well of course I am trying to take money out, I am at the casino!" So he got put on hold again and the guy comes back and tells him, do not use the casino ATM's as they are screwing the card up. He says for him to go to RBC and it will work. Chris said to him "Do you guarantee it is going to work? This will be twice that I have gone in 10 minutes and it is $10 per cab ride!" The guy guaranteed it would work this time and says "If it does not work, call us back and we will reimburse you the taxi money too." So he goes back out and the same taxi is sitting there. So Chris gets in and says "Round 2 coming up!"... He goes up there, hobbles back into the bank again and guess what? DECLINED! So out he goes, gets in the cab and says "Just take me freaking home!" So he came home and had to come in and borrow $20 off me to pay the cabbie. He couldn't even pay the first time as he had no money but the cabbie said "Pay me next time, no big deal!| So he calls back again and this guy went through all his attempts and said that was saying "chip error" for every single one of them, it was never ged for fraud at all he said. So now he has to go to the bank tomorrow when they are open and get a new card. Chris mentioned the taxi thing and the guy immediately transferred $20 into his account!

So he is going tomorrow to get his card straightened out hopefully. The only other good thing is when he called the first time, the girl told him that he had an offer on his account for a free upgrade to a higher fee bank account free for six months! He gets unlimited transactions on his debit card (if in fact it ever works!), 3 free non RBC ATM transaction, free cheques (which is worth $50 by itself) and some other stuff. Chris told her to go for it, since he was at the casino anyways and would have had to pay the $1.50 fee for the machines there.... So at least he has that for 6 months then he will call in September and just cancel it and go back to his $4 account.

Is this the weeks that every bank is against us or what???? *LOL

I hope it's a similar glitch to what happened to my mother when my grand-mother died.

DM had power of attorny(sp??) over GM's finical affairs and when GM died and DM phoned the banks which put a hold on Gm's accounts in her name and those held jointly with DM.

One bank then decided to put a hold on both my sister's and my accounts since they had records that we had once lived at DM's home...many years before. That took several days in pre-phone and internet banking days to sort out.

There are times when a loved one had died when you seriously believe you are the only sane person in the universe..try answering "What's their current address?" when you have any sense of humour.

TD has never held any of my cheques, and Ive gone in with almost 10k before. I wonder if its just the discretion of the specific teller? If so thats not cool at all.

Its standard practice however for them only to have so much cash at a time out of the timer safe. I know if I'm planning on withdrawing over 500 in USD or 1000 in CDN funds I call a day ahead to make sure they set that aside. Seems that they do that more and more with all the bank robberies.

I wonder if the bank robbers do the same thing?

Weaver - So sorry for the sudden loss of your best friend. I do have some understanding for how upsetting that experiences like this bank one must be....

I work for a Financial Institution and you have no idea the amount of fraudulent drafts that they get (even ones that look like they are from our own institution and I can barely tell the difference! ).... I am always amazed when I see them. What I always do suggest though - is that if you know someone at the branch you deal with - either an investment person - assistant manager or manager - or lender/loans officer - is make sure that you have their name and that they know who you are. Tellers get paid peanuts and they certainly aren't paid to take the risk of breaking the banks rules for holds for drafts..... But a manager/management can and will vouch for people that they know and get holds changed or lifted. Unfortunately the losses with fraud these days are so large that the front line can't ignore the rules set by the company or they will simply lose their job -- and I'm sure you wouldn't want to see a front line person lose their job over it. If you had a Line of Credit on that account they would definitely have advanced the funds without any question. Sorry - you probably just wanted sympathetic ears rather than logic but I do understand how frustrating it can be.

Sally, it depends on the account. On our business account with them, they never hold anything as well as all the accounts we have linked to it, but my personal account is not linked with them and seems to have much lower limits.

If you regularly have large cheques the limits on them is higher, and if you usually carry a decent balance (rather than draining the account) it seems higher. My personal account is my 'spending money' for the month, I put my pay in, transfer a portion to savings and a portion to our joint account for bills and 'live on' the rest. That account has a $2000 limit before they tell me they are holding cheques. But I have brought in British cheques for $1000+ and they hand me the cash even though it would take them weeks to get the money from a UK bank but a cheque from my company for $2500 they will hold.

Just my everyday chequing account, I only have gone in a few times with large cheques of that size it was never an issue. I also live in a smaller area where when I walk in they know me by name lol, but i've also banked there for 15 years.

Yeah they are probably much more trusting in a smaller place where they know customers, I had mine lowered when my account was compromised (someone went into the bank and used a faked card to put an empty envelope in the ATM then took out as much as the account would allow) which probably happens a lot more here where they dont recognise poeple in the bank

Weave's Dad, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I know that at a time like this, all the logic in the world cannot overcome the barrage of emotions you are experiencing. My mom will never, ever forget the first time she went into her bank after my father passed away. They had banked there for 30 years. When she told the teller that he had passed away, the teller asked for her Visa card and told her that since she was not the primary cardholder she would have to apply for a new one. (That's understandable.) Then....and I still cannot believe this...she pulled out a pair of scissors and cut it into pieces right in front of all the other customers in the line-up. Had the teller been thinking, she would have discreetly destroyed it after my mom left the bank or taken her into a private office. Although my mom understands that this was only one poorly trained teller, she did move her account to another bank once the estate was wrapped up. All the logic in the world just didn't ever mitigate how she felt that day.

First of all, I am very sorry for your loss. It must be extremely frustrating to have to deal with all of this when all you really want to do is grieve.

That being said, I do work as a teller for one of the large banks and we have no control over the hold amounts placed on your cheques. Your access to deposited funds is generally set when you first open your account. Every time an account is opened, this must be disclosed to the customer. If you've had your account open for a long time, as I imagine you must have, your hold amount is likely based off your credit and income when you first opened the account. They can do an inquiry to see if the access to funds can be increased, but it does register on your credit rating, so most people don't bother.

Having been on the other side, I can tell you the last thing a teller wants to do is make you feel like a criminal trying to defraud the bank, but if we do not follow protocol and a fraudulent cheque were to slip through, we would be held accountable. The hold is there to protect us, just as much as it is to protect you. If anything you should direct your anger toward the insurance company for not issuing a certified cheque, where the funds could have been verified in a few minutes and you would have been given access right away.

As for the $1500 US, a lot of people are under the misconception that we at the bank have a vault stuffed full of money when this is not the case. (I was disappointed when I went into the vault the first time and found it stuffed full of files instead of money. LOL.) Our money gets shipped out every evening and new currency is shipped in every morning. We do have some US cash on hand, but not in large amounts as most people prefer to use a foreign currency exchange like Accurate because they have much better conversion rates than the bank would. As Sally has said, the majority of our cash is kept in a time locked safe, and we have set limits even then. The head teller might have that much, but it would depend on how much US was bought/sold on that given day.

I do not work for TD, but I imagine it works pretty much the same at all the big banks.

I in no way meant to offend, but having been on the other end of an irate customer who thinks I am personally trying to keep them from their money, I can actually sympathize with the teller on this one. That being said, if a customer starts to get upset at all about a hold, I always will go and get the Manager and let them handle it. They are better equipped to handle a situation like that, as they can delete a hold, whereas I would not be able to, even if I wanted to.

''why do u want that much cash'' look.
    its MY money.
    Ugh

Really? I take large amounts of cash out of our accounts all the time and the teller always jokes that I am going to the mall
