This is a great thread!!! Great tips!!!

I've been suffering for over 2 years with abdominal pain, cramping, abscesses, etc. Was in the hospital for 9 days. It's so hard to get a proper diagnosis! First I was told I had had strokes in the colon, then, maybe ulcerative colitis, and now, maybe Crohn's! OMG! I'm on steroids now (Prednisone), metronidazole and Cipro (ugh!).

Anyway, after doing a lot of research on the computer and youtube, etc., I've decided to try going gluten-free. Only 2 days so far, but already I feel GREAT!!! I'm not eating any "raw" foods, popcorn or nuts right now because of an ulcerated colon, but hopefully when I'm healed, I can add these. It's soooooooooo confusing!!!!!!!!

I'm purging all my cupboards and fridge tomorrow of forbidden foods. I love this! From reading all your posts, I do not think it will be too hard to go gluten-free. My BF and I are going to try out Valentino's Pizzeria in Hamilton tomorrow, as they have GF pasta and pizza. Yay!!!

Please keep the tips and recipes coming. I'll try to add some too as I discover things.

At this point, I'm not sure if I'm feeling better because of all the drugs I'm on, or if it's because I've been gluten-free for 2 days!

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks so much!!!!!!!!

Fibrana. (I'm a little hyper on steroids right now!) LOL

I think I might need to cut out gluten. Im lactose intollerant and Im used to feeling crappy most of the time, but even when i do cut out ALL dairy I still get an upset stomache. I never thought about gluten before but it makes so much sense.

Im new to all of this so I have a few questions.

Are gluten free foods more expensive? Are they easy to find at No frills and other popular store? And most importantly do gluten free companies give out coupons?!!! lol

    Hi!,
I will try to help you as best as I can...I have been at this for almost a year...I did cheat a bit during the Xmas months and let me tell you I wish I didn't, as much as I loved eating fluffy bread and yummy cookies I felt blah after, bloated, full and just gross.
When I discovered that I was gluten intolerant I had been going to the Dr's complaning about various things, heart burn, tummy aches, gas, cramping, hard time going to the bath room . All this stopped once I stopped gluten...plus my constant headaches/migraines and my anxiety subsided.
Anyways my point is...I felt so much better after I went GF, yes its hard and it sucks but Id rather feel 100% then only feel 65% good! Plus the damage that teh gluten does to your intestines is scary!

A great book I highly recommend is Gluten Free for Dummies, its about 20 bucks and packed with information...I learned so much plus it has some awesome and easy recipes.

Know to answer your questions lol
Are gluten free foods more expensive? Yes sadly! If it says gluten free you can guarantee it will be more $$, but that doesn't mean you can't find reg food that is GF. All fruits and veggies are GF...what is off limits is wheat, Rye, barley and oats ( there is research being done on this bc some oats are actually ok). Looking at ingrediants is so important bc gluten can be in anything and it won't say gluten...its hidden! A really awesome website that has a safe list which I carry with me always ( print it off and keep it as reference, it has helped me so much!) http://www.celiac.com/articles/181/1...nts/Page1.html

Are they easy to find at No frills and other popular store? YES!!! I buy my basic GF foods (bread and waffles) at RCSS...but I have seen some GF stuff at No frills as well! Walmart super centre caries the bread and waffles as well and I find them to be cheaper. Its hit and miss when it comes to the taste of the food...my fav bread is from Glutano and its the cheese bread....so good toasted, but I had to waste so much $$ to figure this out...some tasted worse then cardboard! haha I also make my own bread...I love using almond four, so much healthier for you then rice flour.

And most importantly do gluten free companies give out coupons?!!!
Yes some do, Happy Planet which makes the best soups and GF sauces is very kind with coupies! I have received coupons from some other companies as well...and there are GF coupies out there...some kind sc'ers have sent me some in RAOKS.

If you have any other questions...please PM me I can talk about this all day haha Hope I helped with your question!

Been contemplating the Blood Type diet for my blood type which is A-. This diet is essentially gluten free and heavy vegetarian/soy although fish and poultry are allowed in modest quantities. Are soba noodles, buckwheat flour, etc. available readily at your local grocery stores or do we have to venture into the health food store? As previously mentioned, my son is autistic with the same blood type, so if all goes well with me, I will continue to introduce gluten free foods to him too

    Eriluo,
I have never looked for buckwheat but have been meaning too...I had some crepes made from them and they were amazing. I know Bobs Redmill is available at rcss, no frills, loblaws and they have alot of gf stuff...http://www.bobsredmill.com/
I rarely go to my local health food store...usually I can get most gf stuff at the grocery store or bulk barn. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks so much for the feedback I will definitely keep you posted. I am actually looking forward to it... IT will be hard but I am sure so worth it. Feeling like this is so not worth it! Plus I have to be around for a long time for my son Jack so Thanks so much! I perused and studied my Rodale Whole Foods Cookbook today and there are a lot of gluten free recipes there to try too

Last night made falafels! They were so so so good (Thanks to Anne)
    I can of chikpeas
coriander, cumin, small onion, garlic, salt and I added some paprika...in a food processor blend it all up...it will look like a dip lol
Add 1 1/2 cups of almond flour ( you may be able to use another gf flour such as rice or maybe an all purpose gf flour but I love almond flour). mix the almond flour by hand into the mixture...heat oven to 400 and bake for 20 min then broil for 5.

For the dip I made a dill yogurt...so simple and so good!
plain yogurt...and 2 tbs (depends how much yogurt you have) mix and let sit for a few min so the flavors develop....voila it was amazing!!!

made 2 amazing gf things today...hot crab and artichocke dip and almodn flour choc chip cookies ( I made these 2 times bc there amazing!)

If you haven't used almond lfour before, please do its amazing! And its packed with nutriants and protein!

For the dip I I used the imitation crab (make sure there is no wheat flour in it, some do) and a can of articoke hearts pulsed it a few times in the food processor, then added 1 cup light mayo, 1 cup light soud cream, 2 cups grated baby parmesan the real stuff lol and mixed adn baked for 20 min....ate with nacho chips! So good! Next time I have guests over this is my go to dip it was fast and so tastey!

For the cookies I used 1 1/4 cup almond flour, 1/2 ts baking soda, 1/2 salt, 1/2 cup choc chips, 1/4 cup grape seed oil (any oil is fine) and 1/4 agave nectar - mix and drop on cookie sheets bake for 8 to 10 min...let cool completely and enjoy!!!

Today I officially started Day #1 of Eriluo's gluten-free adventure I had a brown rice wrap with natural pb and honey for breakfast and for lunch I am having a brown rice wrap with tofu-egg salad. I am following the eat for your blood type regime, so I am trying to forego gluten, red meat and most dairy, and so far, so good, although I have only been up 6 hours so far *LOL* I did a $400+ grocery shop yesterday (that's including coupons) and boned up on misc. gluten free products, misc. flours, tofu, veggies galore et al. so am full speed ahead. Thanks for having such a helpful thread VeeVee et al.

P.S. Forgot to add tried Jack on gluten-free Mac and Cheese on Saturday and he had no clue! Woo hoo!

I'm cheering you on, eriluo!! My DS and DH have multiple food allergies/sensitivities, and we have been learning as we go along. I hope that this transition goes well for you!

Thanks BookMom! I appreciate your support We just finished a supper of skinless boneless chicken drumsticks cooked in honey, garlic, V-H Soy and sesame oil along with gluten free mac and cheese with broccoli and it was a success. DH cooks all the suppers, so he is being super at accomodating me. His only complaint was the gluten free mac and cheese took 30 minutes to cook

Please be careful with the soy...soy sauce can contain gluten

Great idea for a snack...carrot fries!
We made these last nigh to snack on and WOW...I was skeptical at first but they went so fast bc they rocked!!!

Fresh carrots cut into fries...toss with olive oil and salt and then palce on baking sheet (not touching) bake for 20 min or so then broil for a bit to get the top crispy...enjoy! I will be making these again this weeken for snacks! I had a pic but BF unplugged my cord and I cant find it now haha will post when I find it...and yell at him! lol
