We have been getting weird calls lately where they ask for the homeowner (my dad). He's at work, yet they keep calling around the same time every afternoon. You would think they would have taken the hint by now to call later or earlier duh! Then when I tell them he isn't home they ask if I'm his wife?? When I tell them no they hang up on me immediately...So weird because they never even ask if she is here (my mom is usually) they just hang up so it must not be that important LOL!

Yeah! These people have no respect once they find out you won't buy into their bullcrap.
It worries me knowing how many elderly people could fall for this or give them access to their computer.Everytime you like my post I give the dog in my display picture a big *KISS!*

Although these calls are annoying and I get them from time to time, I have never received the computer scam one. Although I have heard of it. And I'll tell you what, I am a telemarketer, but I call my company's own clients. (PS- my employer would not call me a telemarketer but it is what it is.) These scam artists make my job harder as people often have their guard up as soon as I get them on the line. It's not always pretty, but it's a job and it pays well. When I get calls from companies I am very polite and say I am not interested and hang up. No point in hanging on the line to hear them rebut (which they are trained to do). I like when people are polite and to the point if they are not interested or are at all suspicious about the reason for my call.

I had one of these computer 'experts' call here as well and tell me something was wrong with my computer....I asked him what kind of computer I had but too bad for him he guessed wrong. Actually I had quite some fun with this....told him that before I gave my personal information, I wanted his first. He gave me his name and address and phone number and then I told him I would call him back. Checked out his personal information and of course it was bogus. Knew that right from the start when he said he was Matthew and could barely speak English.
What bugs me a lot is an 'unknown number' calling me about three times a day (we have call display so I don't pick up after realizing once too often that it is Telus with some marketing scheme)....I may have to call Telus and speak to some head person there because these calls are just downright rude.

Some people "adopt" more canadian/american sounding names because theirs are too hard to pronounce. I have a few friends that go by different names here at school because it's easier to pronounce compared to their real name. The rest of the info was more than likely bogus though LOL I really don't see a telemarketer readily giving out information that readily.

With legitimate telemarketers I usually say no thank you and hang up. They usually respect that and don't call back. But these scammers who call anytime of day, any day of the week I have decided to entertain myself and waste their time. Sometimes I am rude, other times I listen very intently until they ask for any information then I hang up, sometimes I spend the entire time asking them questions until they hang up on me, basically whatever comes to mind at the time. Honestly, it's a game to me now, I could ignore the calls, but they don't stop even if you don't answer, so I might as well waste some of their time. It's a great way to relieve stress and some of the scripts I have come up with in the last couple of weeks have left me and my family laughing in stitches at the end of it. If they don't like it, they can stop calling and trying to scam people.
ETA: The people I do this to call repeatedly, I have said no and yet they call back again, it goes on for weeks at a time. Do they honestly think that if they keep calling that I will eventually say yes? If they harass me (which I 100% feel they are doing) they I will harass them right back. Oh, and the numbers are blocked, or private or fake so I don't know how to track them and the phone companies, police and CRTC don't seem to want to pursue it.Last edited by Giddymonkey; Fri, Jun 8th, 2012 at 02:11 PM.
