RIP Dear Abby.... I always found it amazing that the twins ended up doing competing columns.
We were most used to Ann Landers, more on the homey side.

Tennis player Gussie Moran
Gussie Moran, the American tennis player, who has died aged 89, earned a place in the hearts of a generation of young men, now mostly in their 80s, when she turned up at the 1949 Wimbledon tournament in a tennis dress which revealed her lace-trimmed knickers.
Refused permission by Wimbledon officials to wear a coloured outfit, “Gorgeous Gussie”, as she inevitably became known, had gained her revenge by commissioning the well-known British tennis player turned fashion designer Teddy Tinling to come up with an outfit that conformed to the all-white strictures but which would still make a splash.
Seeded seventh in the competition, Gussie Moran crashed out in her first round singles match, though she made it to the finals in the women’s doubles, where she and her partner lost. But that was hardly the point. As photographers fought to secure the perfect (ground level) spot to show Gussie at her best, with the 84-year-old dowager Queen Mary due to attend, the All England Club committee went into panic mode, castigating Gussie and her outfit for bringing “vulgarity and sin into tennis”. Questions were asked in Parliament.

RIP, Mr. Koch - he was 88. He really turned around the economy of NY, and was quite the character.
He had his headstone planned for quite some time. The marker will bear the Star of David and a Hebrew prayer, “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.”
It also will be inscribed with the last words of journalist Daniel Pearl before he was murdered by terrorists in 2002: “My father is Jewish. My mother is Jewish. I am Jewish.”
Koch explained that he had been moved that Pearl chose to affirm his faith and heritage in his last moments.
Pearl was kidnapped and beheaded while in Pakistan investigating Al Qaeda; died 11 years ago today.

I forgot about Daniel Pearl. That was so sad. I think his wife was pregnant at the time of his death too. Sad.
