Rubin "The Hurricane" Carter, Boxer and wrongly convicted prisoner, dies aged 76
US former boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, whose wrongful conviction for murder caused an international outcry, has died at the age of 76.
He died on Sunday at his home in Toronto, Canada, his friend and former co-defendant John Artis, confirmed.
Carter spent 19 years in prison for three murders in New Jersey in 1966.
The alleged racial motivations behind the incarceration became well-known in Bob Dylan's song Hurricane, several books and a film.
Artis said Carter had died in his sleep, following a battle with prostate cancer, AP news agency reported.
Carter was charged with the murder of three white people in New Jersey in 1966.
He was convicted on the evidence of two white prosecution witnesses, who were attempting to commit a burglary near the location of the murders.
The witnesses recanted their statements in 1974, and Carter was briefly freed in 1976 after the guilty verdicts were overturned.
The case made Carter a high-profile figure in the civil-rights movement, and famous campaigners including Bob Dylan and Muhammad Ali expressed their support for him.

Efrem Zimbalist Jr., star of TV series '77 Sunset Strip,' dies at 95
(Reuters) - Efrem Zimbalist Jr., who portrayed the indefatigable Inspector Lewis Erskine on the long-running U.S. television series "The F.B.I.", died on Friday at the age of 95, according to media reports.
Zimbalist died at his home in Solvang, California, his daughter, actress Stephanie Zimbalist, and his son Efrem Zimbalist III, said in a statement...
From the late 1950s to the mid-1970s, Zimbalist was one of the top stars on U.S. television, playing a private detective on the ABC series "77 Sunset Strip" from 1958 to 1964 before his stint on "The F.B.I." on the same network from 1965 to 1974.
Zimbalist appeared occasionally with his daughter Stephanie Zimbalist on her 1980s TV series "Remington Steele" with Pierce Brosnan, and later did voice work for animated TV shows.
His supporting movie roles included parts in "House of Strangers" (1949) with Edward G. Robinson, "Band of Angels" (1957) with Clark Gable and Sidney Poitier, "Too Much, Too Soon" (1958) with Errol Flynn, "Airport 1975" (1974) with Charlton Heston and "Hot Shots!" (1991) with Charlie Sheen.
He was sometimes a leading man, as in "Harlow" in 1965 with Carol Lynley and "The Chapman Report" in 1962 with Jane Fonda.

What a life she led...
Recommend anyone to read her book "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" - it's fabulous.

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
