Make your own Pediasure for under a $4.00 per batch!
Homemade High-Calorie Pediatric Shake
12 oz. vanilla ice cream (abt. 2 fat scoops with a regular 1/2 cup disher)
1-1/4 c. apple juice
1 c. frozen fruit
2 scoops whey protein powder, vanilla
2 mL Poly-vi-Sol with Iron
1 small or 1/2 large banana (OR 1/2 avocado)
Blend all ingredients well and serve!
Store any remainder in the refrigerator. Makes about 4 8-oz servings; keep in mind that I’m making shakes for two children, so I’m using enough Poly-vi-Sol for two kids. If you’re planning to feed just one kiddo with this, you might either cut the whole recipe in half, making two shakes, or just cut the vitamins. You could also add chocolate syrup or other flavorings for variety/calories (though it’s got plenty of those–keep reading!)
Nutrition info: Per 8 oz serving – 256 cal, 6.3 g fat, 35.4 g carbs, 14.6 g protein.
Total Cost:
Ice cream: $4.00 per 4 litre no name pail
Fruit: 2.99/pound depending on the fruit and the season
Frozen juice: 0.99 per litre
Protein powder: 32.98/5 pounds
Poly-vi-Sol: 8.99/50 mL
Bananas: About 59 cents/pound
The best part is ~ use COUPONS for some of these ingredients and reduce your costs even more!
1 batch shakes: $3.58
1 8-oz serving: 89 cents

Baking bread is such a fun activity to do with kids. Measuring, scooping and kneading provides so many wonderful sensory and fine motor opportunities. Besides, who can resist a house that smells like baking bread. Yum! I found an simple bread recipewith a twist - the addition of honey! I was surprised how simple it was to make this delicious honey bread. But here's the thing, no one will think it was simple. People are really impressed when you tell them you baked your own bread. I don't know why, but try it and see for yourself. You will need:
- 1 package of active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cup of warm milk (110 to 115 degrees)
- 1/4 cup of honey
- 1/8 cup of melted butter
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 4 cups of all purpose flour
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Dissolve one package of yeast into a bowl of the warmed milk. Next add the honey, melted butter, and salt. Mix to combine.
Add 3 cups of flour and mix with hands until a soft dough forms. We saved the last cup of flour for dusting and kneading.
Place the dough on a floured surface and begin kneading for about 10 minutes. This was my kids favorite part. They loved punching, pulling and squeezing the dough.
When you are done kneading, place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it. Place the bowl in a warm place so it can rise and double. This will take about an hour.
Next, punch down the dough and place it in a greased loaf pan. Cover the dough and place in a warm place for another 30 minutes until it rises and doubles.
Bake for 30-35 minutes at 375 degrees. Our top started browning at about 20 minutes so we placed some foil over the pan for the remainder of the cooking time. Remove from pan when done and allow to cool.
We love our honey bread with a little butter which melts so nicely on the still warm bread. I hope you and your kids will try this recipe for honey bread.

7 Edible Christmas Crafts For Kids
Christmas just wouldn't be the same without sweet treats and fun crafts. We think you should combine them both and create edible Christmas crafts to eat and share, from candy cane reindeer to ice cream cone Christmas trees. So gather some goodies, grab your kiddos and create these seven edible Christmas crafts that your kids will love to make and eat!
1
Ice cream cone Christmas trees
Create pint-sized Christmas trees that are perfect for little hands. Turn sugar ice cream cones upside down, cover with green frosting and have your little elves decorate with candies and sprinkles to create an edible craft that is just as fun to eat as it is to make.
2
Candy cane reindeer
Turn simple candy canes into playful reindeer when you twist on pipe cleaner antlers and glue on wiggle eyes to yummy Christmas candy canes. The best part of this edible Christmas craft? Watching your kids get excited as they hand them out to friends and family!
3
Peanut butter play dough
Knead 3 1/2 cups smooth peanut butter with 4 cups of confectioners' sugar and you'll have a sweet, non-toxic Christmas craft that is ready to mold a child's imagination... and it makes a fun snack, too! If your kiddos aren't ready to gobble up their creations right away, whether baked and hardened or in its original remoldable form, seal in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to a week.
4
Rice Krispies creatures
Move over, Rice Krispies squares! The only limit to this sticky and sweet Christmas craft is your kids' imaginations. "The most fun that any child can have is making Rice Krispies Creatures!" shares Susanne Alexander-Heaton, CEO, Motivated by Nature Calgary, AB. "I made them with children I babysat 20 years ago, and they still talk about how much fun it was!" Simply cover hands with butter or butter-coated baggies and mold warm, but not hot, Rice Krispie mixture into any shape you wish.
5
Reindeer cookies
Sugar cookies come to life when you bake Christmas cookies that look just like Rudolph. Have your kids roll and press sugar cookie dough into oval shapes, add pretzel antlers and bake. Hot out of the oven, add candy eyes and a red M&M nose to create a reindeer cookie that is almost too cute to eat.
6
Marshmallow snowmen village
Marshmallows mimic the snowy season, so using them to please crafty kids is a guaranteed hit, shares Karen Hoxmeier, of MyBargainBuddy. "I was able to keep half a dozen kids (ages 3-10) busy for hours making a marshmallow snowman village! When they were done, I wrapped their portion in holiday cellophane and they gave them to their mommies for Christmas."
7
Chocolate dipped spoons
Red or green plastic spoons dipped in microwave-melted milk chocolate make easy Christmas crafts for young kids. Before placing on waxed paper and cooling in the fridge, roll in crushed candy canes or Christmas sprinkles for a festive touch. Cover cooled spoons in cellophane and a ribbon for hot chocolate or coffee stirrer giveaways.JOIN NOW WIN BIG in the Survivor Pool starting in the Spring

Baking for beginners: 6 easy recipes
http://www.todaysparent.com/recipes/...=2#gallery_top
Chocolate Banana Granola Bars
3 super ripe bananas
3 Tbsp almond butter
1/4 cup brown rice syrup
2 Tbsp maple syrup
1 Tbsp extra virgin coconut oil and a bit extra for your baking tin
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
3 cups rolled oats
1 1/4 cup chopped nuts & seeds (I used hazelnuts and pecans)
1/2 cups chocolate chips (I used half and half chips and cacao nibs)
Drizzle
1/4 cup chocolate chips
1 Tbsp coconut oil
splash of milk
Method
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 8" x 12" baking tin with coconut oil. Line the bottom with parchment paper and leave some over hang on either side to help you get your bars out later.
In a standing mixer or with an electric mixer, combine the bananas, the nut butter, brown rice syrup, maple syrup, coconut oil, cinnamon and salt until it's a nice creamy consistency.
In another bowl, toss together the oats, nuts and chocolate bits. Now pour the banana mixture over the dried and stir it all together You'll need a bit of elbow grease here. Keep scraping down the edges of your bowl so you don't lose any of the goodness! Use your scraper to help you get everything out of the bowl and onto the parchment. Spread the batter out flat so that it goes right to the edges of your baking tin. Smooth the top as best you can using a spatula.
Bake for 40 minutes until the top is golden. Allow it to cool completely before applying the drizzle!
Use a double boiler if you have one but I don't. So I placed a bowl over a pot of simmering water, trying to keep the bowl from actually touching the water. It's tricky and I don't think it's the end of the world if it does — just don't let it get too, too hot. Place all of your drizzle ingredients in the bowl and stir them as they melt. Use a spatula to drizzle the chocolate over the bars. Pop in the fridge for a few minutes to firm up the drizzle.
Cut the bars into 12 pieces. They'll keep in an airtight container for around a week.
