I'm awful, I NEVER send thank you cards :( I didn't grow up in a family that ever sent them so maybe that's why. I always thank people for gifts and my children do the same. We don't really have a big extended family and it's usually just family and close friends at b-day parties so we thank everyone in person.
Birthday parties- there is no way I could ever accommodate a whole class full of kids. The boys are allowed to invite a few close friends each and I take them somewhere fun. I remember reading somewhere that a good rule of thumb for parties is 1 child for each year of age... so if they're turning 5, they can invite 5 kids, etc.
I can totally understand why school's would put a policy like that in place but my kids would have to go without if that was the case.
