sort of an odd question but:
this gentleman at the no frills has been offering to take back the carts
for the 25 cents - and this has been happening for weeks.
we started talking with him - found out his teeth needed to be
removed, and they were and now he is waiting for the swelling
to go down.
we always give him the cart -- 25 cents ppphhhttt.
last week he gave wine glasses he had found to us,
he thought they were crystal -- i'm not sure.
and we found out he lives with a woman who has ms
and he is the primary care person.
hence he is sometimes in the parking lot sometimes not.
i've been giving him 4 toonies everytime we see him now.
and wrote down a list of sites to get free stuff from
(thought anyone that bedridden would be online)
she is not on line/no laptop etc.
he has gone from giving me a shoulder rub to a big hug.
i'm not sure what to do to help them out. This thread is currently associated with: No Frills

In your city do they have any organisations that help homeless & indigent people. We have the mustard seed here & if he talked to them they would help. Also the hospital where his wife is being treated have social workers who would help.Bless you madchives for being such a kind caring person.

What a nice thing you did giving him the toonies! WTG.
He seems to want to "work" for his cart quarter and wants to repay your kindness with crystal glasses.
He seems to appreciate your gesture, hence the hugs.
If you can afford it, keep doing what you are doing.Last edited by Shwa Girl; Sat, Oct 6th, 2012 at 03:50 PM.

I did a google search for my city "lethbridge dentists for low income people" and quite a few things came up from names of dentists who do charitable work in the way of doing dentistry for free or for deeply discounted rates to an article that listed resources and ideas like going to the university and seeing a dentistry student...something along the same lines of going to a hairdressing school to get your haircut. Not sure if your city has the same resources but it's worth a shot. Even calling the local health unit to see if they know of any resources for this couple. I love that you care and really hope that something can be found to help this couple out!

If you or they are connected to a faith community perhaps they can be of help.

oh geee gpg i blushed - and hardly anyone gets to see that
you're right i really am a sweet person with a wicked and sometimes
very short temper - not my fault (1/2 scottish 1/4 american 1/4 irish ---help)
i'm not a faith sort of person and think they aren't either,
(was never a good idea for my dad to say 'ok get out now'
telling me to get out of the car for sunday school and then
he did a u-turn and i ended up backside down on the road
- so of course i blame god
)
although that is just me guessing. have noticed he has tattoos
on his knuckles --- 'love' 'hate' so once again i'm guessing
he has 'been inside'.
did ask if he had disability coverage etc for the teeth problem
but if seems (and i know) they barely cover anything - so he
saved up and is going to be fitted for dentures as right now
it is just gums - poor guy and perhaps then we will be able to
understand more of what he says.

How wonderful of you to help them out!
About the teeth - dental colleges at universities often do low cost - and sometimes even free - dental work, done by students but supervised very well.

I don't have any ideas on what more can be done but I think what you're doing is just what he needs.
Someone to talk to and a little money.
I wish more people did what you're doing, getting to know someone in need and thinking about ways to help him.The best things in life...aren't things

I agree with Lynn and Shwa here madchives, an angel you are. Just keep doing what you are able to to help him. Just knowing that you see him, talk with him, validates him and that goes a long way to lift anyone's spirit.
