QOTD: Thur 1 Nov - Holidays

I love Christmas well, and don't ever decorate until the second week in December. I also respect Remembrance day. We can't stop the commercial aspect of it though for the Christmas season. I did post a thread just to get people thinking of the Christmas gift exchange this year, in the hopes that we don't have the same fiasco with some people that we had last year, not posting proberly, not sending out their gift and so on. I just wanted to give people a chance to think about it.

That way, on November 12th, we could get the sign up started, and gifts sent out by the first week in December, the proper way.....well, it's nice to think that would happen, isn't it

Hubby put the lights on the house outside already which is great, because up here we could see snow anytime and I won't have him on a ladder when it's that cold out. However, we don't turn them on until after Remembrance day, likely not until Dec 1st. I love seeing the lights on the houses, trees in the windows...if it's December, it's never too early for me to see them. I can get downright depressed in January when they all disappear and the streets are gloomy again...I think it adds to my S.A.D.
I've already started my Christmas shopping although most will be done and hopefully completed on our trip to NY in a week or so. I wear my poppy now in remembrance of our fallen....my Mom's fiance, a Canadian soldier, died in the bombing of London..she never liked talking about the war.....and the Rolex watch he gave her was stolen from their home years ago...I often wonder who's wearing it now...and it still hurts...she loved that watch he gave her....

ANYWAY.....bottom line: stores: respect Remembrance Day, don't put that Christmas musak on until after that day!

I don't up my tree until Dec 1st. I don't like seeing Yule( I refuse to call it xmas-Christian which I am not) decorations being put in stores in October. I mean, what happened to respecting R.Day?

Again, I don't think that getting into the Christmas spirit is in any away disrespecting Remembrance Day. It's not like the stores put anything out for that so I don't blame them for putting out Christmas stuff.

The Dollarama has some Christmas stuff out before Halloween!

I set up my indoor Christmas decor after Rememberance Day. The exception is the outdoor Christmas lights. I like to set them up before it becomes too cold or snowy. However I don't turn them on until after Rememberance Day.

I start Christmas shopping in October to beat the Christmas crowds.

I dont think its disrespectful, I just think its too soon. Many of the stores around my area have someone collecting donations through the poppy sales or they have a display on the counter to donate/buy a poppy. I really just hate seeing Christmas stuff in late September - as beautiful as those decorations are, I think I would go mad if I worked in a department store where it was full on Christmas with non-stop Christmas music playing day after day after day.....

One of the Dollaramas near me (we have about 3-4 within 5km) started to put out some Christmas stuff when they took down the back-to-school items. (Just 1/3 of one aisle, but it knocked me for a loop. I haven't been back since to see what else they've done, although walking by a different dollarama this morning I did see TONS of xmas stuff!) *sigh*

i am not meaning to offend anyone,just my opinion that it is super annoying seeing all these commercial things go from one holiday to the next,too soon,it's like we just go from one on to the next...halloween shopping on october 31st,to christmas bombardment on the 1st of november.i used to work retail so maybe that is why it annoys me so much.it's just kind of gross to hear and see christmas music the day after halloween and see commercials on tv.is there not a rest period?

How early is too early? Well I was in Costco in August and they had their Christmas stuff in full swing. That was WAY too early if you ask me. I'm a self proclaimed Christmas Freak and I think that around Mid Nov is good. But that's just me.

I agree with vesper and others - December = Christmas.

Only because thats when winter sets in, hopefully it starts to snow, cuz christmas isn't the same without snow

True.... How could that slip my mind (my nearest city is made up of families who are very proud of their Irish ancestry)... In fact, they host a popular Irish festival every summer.
