Missing person?

Does anyone know anything about filing a missing person report? My brother in law (he lives with us) went out to meet a friend yesterday morning at 8:30-9:00am and hasn't been home since. The friend he went to meet showed up at our house last night around 10:30pm last night looking for him. When we told him that he wasn't here, his friend got really worried. He told us my brother in law had eat'en subway with him then told him he was headed back to our house. This was around 5pm last night. No one has seen or heard him since??

I was told we have to wait till 5pm today to file a missing person report? is this true?

Yes I believe its 24 hours after he was last seen. Best would be to call your local police station though.

Have you tried calling all the hospitals/jails in your area to make sure he's not there? I think that would be my first step before filing a missing persons report.

Never to early to start calling all his friends, visit his hangouts, even ex girlfriends... anything to give you a clue as to what he might have been thinking leading up to his disappearance. If he has a facebook account, start asking his online friends to.

even when you file a report, it is not like the police are going to go out looking for him. they will check police reports, maybe hospitals and not much else right away. He is an adult, he is allowed to just up and leave and unless there is reason to believe something bad happened, the police are not, and cannot just go out and find him.

Most likely he will show up on his own within days, but if not, count on yourself and other loved ones to be the detectives initially.

I hope you have success. hospitals would do everything they could to notify next of kin. I seriously would start by contacting friends... you'd get a treasure trove of clues.

Most married men who go missing.... it is because they did something very foolish or feeling very blue. I hope this is the case, but over 90% return feeling ashamed. The next most likely thing is he is in jail and declined to tell anyone.

He's not married he is my husbands brother. We called the hospitals, he is not there. We will be putting in a missing person report at 5:30pm tonight. He has been known to show signs of Bi-polar disorder in the past so we are very worried.

If he has any mental health issues at all, be sure to get in touch with the OPS right away. Call the non-emergency line (9-1-1 will tell you to go in to the nearest location) and/or head over to your local division.

When you go, have a picture of him, the description of what he was wearing, places he likes to frequent, etc. Have information on his meds, if any, medical conditions, etc., if they're relevant. Be able to tell them how long it's been since he has been seen, his cell phone number, car make/model/plate number, stuff like that.

What they normally will do is issue a BOLO for him ("be on the look out", they may call it something else) and their uniformed patrol guys will all be advised. They may (no guarantees) issue a media advisory as well. You won't catch the six o'clock news at this point, but if you get there now you may make the eleven p.m. one if they're worried he could pose a danger to himself.

Have someone from the family who is as "together" as possible deal with this if you can. It's an extremely stressful situation and the more coherent the person is, the easier it is for the cops to get the information from them and out on the street, where it needs to be, as fast as possible. I don't mean to diminish your concern at all - quite the opposite, in fact - but even having a third party go with you, if that's necessary, will be helpful.

Be warned though: if the third-party person is helping, he/she will get "And who are you in relation to this person?" so you (or his wife or whomever) also need to be there.

I can't tell you how many times I've dealt with people who are (completely understandably) totally distraught because their kid/parent/etc. is nowhere to be found, and they are so overwhelmed that they can't focus or be rational enough to give us the info needed in order to start looking, but scream at us to get started (which we want to do...but we need to do certain things and get certain info first).

Have you heard anything? I'm praying that he turns up safe and sound. Normally people with bi-polar issues are fine. It would only be an issue if he was to get in an arguement with someone. I hope he turns up safe and sound. Please keep us abreast of how YOU are doing. NOthing worse that this type of stress.
