Here is a typical example of how you can obtain extra savings just by asking. Our family was in need of a new camera. We narrowed it down to a Canon which was on an after Boxing Day clear out sale for $103 which was an excellent deal. I decided to ask if they would throw in a camera case with this camera. The clerk went in search of the manager and, after some time, came back and told me to take any camera case I wanted. So, that was an additional $25 savings right there! My Dad would have been proud - he taught us kids the power of bargaining fairly.

I agree, Momof5boys. The worst that can happen if you ask is that someone will say no but if you don't ask, you don't get anything anyway.

We live in an apartment and intend to be here long term. I wanted to get quotes to have ceramic tile backsplash put in kitchen. I checked with the property manager to make sure I could put up the ceramic tile backsplash and found out that the renovations for new tenants include ceramic tile backsplash. I asked if their people could do the ceramic tile backsplash in our apartment and was told they could, although we would have to pay for it. I asked if we and the property management company could share the cost and without a second's hesitation, the property manager said yes.

Long story short........ our half was $127.75. We couldn't have bought the materials for that and we didn't have to go outside for quotes.

I love doing this! We usually just try and get a warranty thrown in as those can tend to add up!

I have my family convinced to ask if there is a military discount (very helpful). Dad was getting a scooter, and he had limited funds, but when I mentioned a military discount the guy practically fell over himself to get dad the bigger, better models, extras and stuff that were his package deal paid by VA and medical coverage. Had I not mentioned it, he'd be getting the very basic model, no ramp, nothing extra, and be paying a lot more than $600.
I ask if there is a military discount whenever I buy a large purchase, and lots offer something (Best buy had 10% off some items). It doesn't hurt to ask.

    Awesome, OP.

Our old car was bought new.
Asked for pre-delivery inspection to be taken off ($349?). Done.
Asked for the $500 free gas incentive coming up two days later. Done
Asked for the $500 new grad discount. Provided proof. Done
Asked for free window sun shields. Done.
Asked for old car trade in + extra off for winter tires ($500?). Done.
Asked them to deliver the car to our place on a weekday evening. Done.
Asked for free car mats. Supposedly extra. Done.

Asked insurance company for discount for taking winter driving course. Done.

    momof5boys!

Great post...and all replies are fantastic.

Here is another one. I had sent an email to the moderators of SC for an idea of posting the stores that we use and others that SC'ers might be interested in shring because Staples, SDM, Penningtons, they might all have different Seniors ages that apply to their store. I mentionned this on another thread and even if not shared ask what at what age is the senior discount here. I mentionned it at big box store in Gatineau and it was 52-yes 52 so...that was a big savings for us and the only day in DHs' life that he was happy to be 52. I've yet to see another. Thanks to everyone.
