Thread: The Cost of Being Vegetarian
-
Tue, May 14th, 2013, 04:34 PM #1
A lot of people think it's expensive to be vegetarian but if you find the right place to shop and buy seasonal and are willing to buy #2 instead of #1's all the time it can be very reasonable. We have places to buy bulk beans and legumes, an Asian place for our noodles and Sami Fruit and Bonanza for most of the other necessities. This order will do the 6 of us until at least next week.
Total for this including some ham(my kids are not totally on board yet) $58.47
The most expensive things were the case of grapes 18lbs for $8.99 and the cherries @ $3.99 lb which ended up being $8.48. They have the most amazing kale for $1.29 a bunch, loose bananas for .99 a package(not sure why people NEED to buy them in bunches), snap peas $1.49 a package and so on.This thread is currently associated with: N/A

Awesome brag. I must say I am completely jealous. I have yet to find the right place to purchase my produce. After a yearand a half in Winnipeg you think I would have found the place to go....

I have it 2 ways, 1st I have it raw in a green shake(kale, romaine lettuce, flax seed, and a fruit either banana or strawberries) in the morning and 2nd I steam it, I do not boil veggies anymore, except for potatoes. The steamed kale goes in my chinese noodles with edamame or just as a side.

Great post! I find that on average the local fruit and veggie markets are cheaper than grocery stores and even the big box stores here. It's definitely worth taking the time to find out where the best deals are in the area.

Good shop, but I'm curious about the bananas, 1. Why are they in a package like that, isn't that just creating more garbage for a fruit that already has its own protective skin? and 2. Under plastic like that, don't they go black quicker?
