A son put hidden camera in his mother’s long term care room after he was not satisfied with the answers he received about his mother's hip and eye injuries. Mother has dementia and could not tell him what happened. Then came this video...

Some nursing homes are not good for your relatives. Take a close look at your loved ones in long term care, especially if they have dementia, Alzheimer disease etc.

    *Video (view with caution)

After this video. The four employees were suspended and later fired. The Ontario Minister of Health visited the home and went on camera too.

    What a good son!

    Yes.
They are supposed to be helping not hurting. If they are doctors or nurses or health care aides, their training tells them to "do no harm". They were fired, but the home is still under question - training and such.

I don't think this has anything to do with training. You either care about people or you don't. You can train someone to do proper lifts and transfers, but you can't train them to be a decent human being.

About training - The College of Physicians and Surgeons, The College of Nurses, The College of Dental Hygenists and The College of Dentists -- they all take a serious stance on members who do not treat their patients well. They can revoke medical licenses for such practices. Poor behaviour towards patients is not something these colleges would like to be associated with.

This woman should never have been treated so poorly. I am glad her son took the steps he did - videotaping. Because of his desire to get to the bottom of things, his mother will benefit and other elderly parents will benefit. Those caregivers who may be practicing such poor behaviour towards patients will think twice.

I hope there is some kind of in home care (health professionals) available for your Mom and Dad. Your Dad needs help and a break too (caregiver fatigue).

Sorry to hear about your Mom's current state of health.
But, nice that you are able to help her and your Dad.

I think there are many Canadians in your situation. As the Baby Boomers age, there will be more.

My Mom was in a Long term care.. It seemed to be a very safe spot for her, but I was always in every second day or other to check on her, and to make sure there was no problems. Some people put their parents or loved ones in there, and hardly eve check.. and sometime's that leads to problems.. But where Mom was.. she was taken care of very very well..

I'm NOT defending any of these people in this video at all. This was very wrong and it is my opinion, leadership at this place must be very weak and needs to be replaced.

My mother worked as a long term care nurse for many years, she quit because of the high stress adult children would cause and that there was always 1 or 2 patients who would violently attack nurses, and no one could do anything about it.

These folks who work here, need constant stress management assistance. It's hard!

Sorry about your mother, that is very honourable and brave of you, to do what you do!

In Ontario, when a patient in long term care becomes violent to staff, the patient has to be moved to a locked down facilitiy. If there is not room in the lock down facility, the family is called and the patient has to leave.

The staff is unable to care for the number of patients assigned to them, plus a patient that may become violent and need extra care. There is not enough staff per shift for this.

A friend got such a call - her father became violent and she was tasked with finding a lock down facility for him, because he could not stay where he was living, any longer.
