Regarding the secrecy involved in organ donation, there is a lot of testing, both physical and psychological, before one is even placed on the transplant list. Not everyone is eligible for a transplant, even if they are physically able to handle the surgery. There is an awful lot of emotion involved, which can easily skew reason. The powers that be behind the transplant network feel it's better to keep individuals separate.

I have a certain insight from the other side (as a transplant recipient). On one hand I would love to meet the donor family, if only so they can see how much their loss has changed my life. However, there is a tremendous amount of guilt involved - in order for me to be alive, someone had to die. It's a little easier to think of it as a miraculous bit of recycling than to know how much a family had to suffer to make it happen.

Wildebeest, Serengeti

On a recent safari in the Serengeti of Tanzania, I captured this image of an infant wildebeest
keeping up with its mother. These remarkable animals can run at the same speed of the
adults within 45 minutes of their birth. Finding ourselves in the middle of thousands of these animals
migrating across the vast Serengeti was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

wondering what i and you were doing 45 minutes after we were born, personally i was not running.

Well, it appears I will be in town this weekend. DL/H concert is rescheduled to Jul 28, which actually works out better for me. Good thing I didn't tell the critters they were off to the treat dispensers' place for a holiday, they'd rebel at the thought of being stuck with me this weekend.
