When my parents dropped me off at college (6 hours from home), my mom cried all the way home - my dad said she never stopped for the whole 6 hours. I also cried when they left...I actually contemplated running after the car screaming "DON'T LEAVE MEEEEEEEEEEEE!" haha Its hard..but like others have said it gets easier with time. I still get chocked up when I leave my parents place after a visit ( I am 4 hours away now).

Yeah, when I finally moved out for grad school at 22 (I lived at home during my undergrad) my Mom sat in my empty room at home and bawled like a baby. It's a hard time for everyone.

Its this weekend coming up for my son. Were leaving on Friday, spending the night in NS, then taking the drive on Saturday morning to the university. I swear, everytime I talk, think or type out the words, I get a knot in my stomach. We went to Moncton yesterday to buy some things, and it was just the 2 of us, so we got a chance to have a nice conversation. It was so great to be able to talk uninterrupted, have some laughs, even sing off key to some songs.

Congrats on having a son going to post secondary and finding his way in the world.
Before you get too sad, give yourself a pat on the back first. You've done a great job as a parent and you should feel proud!
That said, I can't even imagine that day coming for me (though it will come sooner than I want, I'm sure!) I bawled all the way home when my youngest started JK...lol...and she was only gone for 8 hours and then she was mine again for a whole day. It's tough. Find something to distract yourself with and hopefully that will take some of the edge off. And remember that time is the great healer--it will take time but you will adjust!"Be yourself. Its tough on all of us, isnt it! We want our kids to be independent, but at the same time its hard for US emotionally to let them go. I am feeling so sad thinking about leaving him at university, but at the same time I am so happy and excited for him in this chapter in his life.

It definitely is one of the hardest stages to go through in parenting. Letting them go off on their own and trust that you have done all that you could to prepare them for this next journey. Right now I am home alone. My daughter is leaving tomorrow to go back to college, and I was hoping to spend this evening with her. Instead, she is out with her best friends shopping . I understand........ but, it doesn't make it any easier. She will be home for Thanksgiving......... then Christmas. It is a whole new experience for everyone.

I wish I had the living on campus experience! I went to college/university locally (Toronto) but I always wanted to go and at least experience it by living on my own. My dad and mom didn't like the fact of me being away from home and not knowing what was going on. I don't think they would have stopped me if I went, but, everytime I talked about it they had that scared look on their faces LOL. So to make things easier on them I just went to school locally and stayed home. BUT, I commend you for letting your son start his life on his own on a great foot! By you giving him all your love and support for doing it, it will only help him in his future! And I am sure he knows he can always come home no questions ask if he doesn't like it.
I hope he has a great start and good luck to you both!

Good Luck to all the college/university students starting out and good luck to the parents sending them out to the world
It's going to be OK!
Just remember you raised them well, they may fly away for now, but, little birds always come back!

DiamondLi I know it must be hard right now. But, remember, he is not going to be gone for long, by the time you know it he will be home for the holidays. Also, be happy and proud! He is going to university and not to many people get the chance that he has to go. Be proud he is a smart kid and will do well.

My sons all settled - the campus is nice, and the kids over there were very welcoming. My sons officially a university student, but I miss him so... My youngest asked when were gonna pick him up (think Sam thought big brother was gonna be home tonight). Think I will take a break for awhile, although I know this is for the best and am so so proud of him, I miss him like something awful.
