After my thread about the giant wasp nest (youtube video) I've discovered we have one on the house (of course not as big as the video one lol).
I'm allergic to the buggers and carry an epi pen. I'm terrified of wasps.
I'm staying at my parents right now, the nest is on their house. There is a crack/hole in the stucco at the side of the house facing the driveway. It's about 14 feet off the ground. The hole is just below some wood trim. Nest is not visible.
Anyways my parents told me about it this past Saturday. My dad took a can of household raid, climibed a ladder, and sprayed the nest at dark. He did this Saturday, Sunday. Still 4-5 wasps going back and forth.
Monday I purchased CIL Jet Foam spray for wasps, hornets at Canadian Tire. You can shoot the stuff from 6-8 feet away or get up close. Straw insert you attach. My dad sprayed right into the hole at night both on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday I went outside and didn't see any except one wasp buzzing around the hole. I thought it was one that didn't die or new one looking for a home. Today I go out and spotted two or three going back and forth.
My dad hasn't patched the hole yet. He thought of roofing cement to seal it. Apparently wasps can chew through some materials?
We are going to give another application of the CIL tonight. It looks potent according to the description on the bottle.
I contacted an exterminator. They charge anywhere from $80.00- $170.00 depending on how high the nest is. They use a powder insecticide that apparently the wasps crawl through it spreads to the others and they die. You can buy the powder to apply yourself but they don't have any in stock to buy (make take weeks to get in).
My dad flipped his lid when he heard what they charge to exterminate. I doubt he will have someone come out. I'm hoping we can get rid of it ourselves but I also feel it's a danger to myself since I'm allergic. I offered to pay half the bill (I don't have alot of money) but he's still balking.
So I guess keep trying the CIL Jet Foam spray? Roof cement be good to seal up the hole once the wasps are gone? Any tips? My dad sprays when it's dark because it's less dangerous, there dozing supposedly.
If there are only 4-5 going in and out of the hole that means it's a small nest or could be many inside?
Wasps here are always bad in August. I hate them, nasty little buggers. This thread is currently associated with: Canadian Tire, GuessLast edited by toban; Tue, Aug 9th, 2011 at 12:09 PM.

When we had a nest last year at the front of the house - corner of the inside roof overhang and house - husband used Raid Wasp and Hornet killer - got the wasps and the whole nest right away.
Gah, it was awful - mailbox is right below that!
What to use when you can't see the nest

I would imagine if there is still activity around the crack, that you are not actually spraying into the nest, but that it's just an entry point. Someone is going to have to find where the nest actually is and take care of it. Patching the hole I don't think would be very effective. We use the Raid Wasp and Hornet killer spray and/or foam as well. We've never had to do more than one application.

I'm not much help in how to get rid of it... (my husband is in charge of that kind of thing, I'm terrified of being stung.) However, once it is gone, I would suggest buying a "fake" wasps nest to hang... It deters other nests from forming. My husband did that, we haven't had one around the house since.

I was wondering if the spray wasn't actually hitting the nest. With the entry point, the nest could be to the side or up higher. Poulins has sold out of the insecticide dust that Natalka posted in the link. I'm thinking its better to have them come here to exterminate. My dad will not be happy at all and probably will say no way. He doesn't want to put the money out, even though I offered to pay half.
I heard wasps nest grow fast. I just hate going walking down the driveway. They share a driveway with the neighbour so I walk on their side. I give them a wide berth but it still freaks me out. I have to carry my epi pen all the time.Last edited by toban; Thu, Aug 4th, 2011 at 04:14 PM.

Try Chemfree Insectigone or Eco-way Bug Killer. Both are powders you can pick up at any Canadian Tire, Home Depot or Home Hardware. We use it on ants, but it has the same effect on any bug that comes in contact with it.
If they are getting into other cavities, you may need to start drilling some small holes into each cavity in order to get the powder in.Last edited by nothingfancy; Thu, Aug 4th, 2011 at 04:27 PM.

Our DD (okay..her hubby) will be doing that tonight...she and I went to CT to pick up the Raid foam stuff. I sure hope it works! It's not a hanging nest, it's in the ground, under some of their hostas!

We get them every year.
We don't know why they are attracted to the house.
We have learned to check early in the spring and spray when they start to make the nest.
But don't they try at another location!
So, this year, since we have kept on top of things, no wasp problem.
Guess they have a source of food close by, is why they stay around.

I get them every year too, and I am scared as hell of them. I have two types, used to have three types and I hear a third type is further up the road from me. Brrrr! The types I have are solitary, so there is no one nest to be found. I guess they are all over live where they can.
I had the exterminator come in last month to spray and they still don't stay away.
Those fake nest things don't work, I can tell you after three years of using them.

My dad sprayed more of the CIL jet foam tonight into the crack
when it was almost dark. Some of the foam fell to the ground. He put his hand and ear to the wall and said he couldn't hear any buzzing. After he stepped off the ladder I did see two bugs. Not sure if they came out of the hole or flew over to it. He said it's probably Mosquitos. They looked larger... He figured wasps are inside when it's almost dark. The exterminator costs $80.00 plus tax. They said a technician could come out Monday. I'll look for the dust at Canadian Tire. I mentioned it to my dad but he doesn't want to use it. In fact he said he will patch the hole tomorrow. I don't think it's a good idea yet. I heard wasps can chew through certain materials. If you have wasps in walls you would hear buzzing, even at night?Last edited by toban; Fri, Aug 5th, 2011 at 12:57 AM.

wasps are territorial...so for sure i know those hanging fake wasp nests work, we use them and prior to this we would get them yearly in out tent trailer exhaust pipe AND in our eaves on the roof pitch....we used the raid foam stuff too PLUS the Insectigone powder...good luck...DH is deathly allergic too, he carries an EPI PEN too.
